Ndichiyamwa – Chapter 3 of Nhoroondo a musical story off Gwara Album by Jah Prayzah

Ndichiyamwa Lyrics and Translation

Baba
Father
vakarovera kumaruva
spent time away at the country
Mhamha
Mama
ndokuchonera maRimuka
was scarce in Rimuka

Hupenyu hwacho hwakasara hwaita
Life got flipped
Manyama mire nerongo
turned upside down
Ooh mhamha
makandisiya ndichiyamwa
you left me a suckling
Hupenyu hwacho hwakasara hwaita
Life got flipped
Manyama mire nerongo
Turned upside down
Ooh mhamha
makandisiya ndichiyamwa
you left me a suckling

Shoko rimwero randoshuve ripinde munzeve dzenyu
The one word I want you to hear
ndopunyaira ndotsumwaira
I toil and I dose
Ndanga ndiri parukunguwe
I was in Rukunguwe
Nemusumbu wenzimbe
With a bundle of sugarcane
Nekatsapo kangu kematohwe
And a handful of snort apples
Ndakamirira shunguhwe
Waiting impatiently
Ndanga ndiri paRukunguhwe
I was by Rukunguwe
Nemusumbu wenzimbe
With a bundle of sugarcane
Nekatsapo kangu kematohwe
Ndakamirira shunguhwe

Rudo rwamai ndoruonera kumaroto
A mother’s love I only see in my dreams
Rudo rwamai inga rwakakurisa
A mother’s love is bigger
Kudarika mukana
Than opportunities

Rudo rwamai ndoruonera kumaroto
A mother’s love I only see in my dreams
Rudo rwamai inga rwakakurisa
A mother’s love is greater
Kudarika mukana
Than opportunities

Hupenyu hwacho hwakasara hwaita
Life got flipped
Manyama mire nerongo
turned upside down
Ooh mhamha
makandisiya ndichiyamwa
you left me a suckling
Hupenyu hwacho hwakasara hwaita
Life got flipped
Manyama mire nerongo
Turned upside down
Ooh mhamha
makandisiya ndichiyamwa
you left me a suckling

Kana tsamba zvayo kuti gwendo gwangu
Not even a let to say my journey
Gwagugwa ndichauya mangwana
Has been cancelled will come tomorrow
Ini ndirindire guyo sembwa
as I watch the grinding stone like a dog
Makanoita chichoni kachana
You were a stranger far away
Mukuwomoka, mukurota
In my thoughts and my dreams
Ndichishuvira kuona minana
Expecting to see a miracle
Ini ndirindire guyo sembwa
As I watch the grinding stone like a dog
Makanoita chichoni
You were a foreigner

Ndanga ndiri paRukunguwe
I was by Rukunguwe
Nemusumbu wenzimbe
With a bundle of sugarcane
Nekatsapo kangu kematohwe
And a handful of snort apples
Ndakamirira shunguhwe
Waiting impatiently
Ndanga ndiri paRukunguwe
I was by Rukunguwe
Nemusumbu wenzimbe
With a bundle of sugarcane

Rudo rwamai ndoruonera kumaroto
A mother’s love I only see in my dreams
Rudo rwamai inga rwakakurisa
A mother’s love is greater
Kudarika mukana
Than opportunities

Rudo rwamai ndoruonera kumaroto
A mother’s love I only see in my dreams
Rudo rwamai inga rwakakurisa
A mother’s love is greater
Kudarika mukana
Than opportunities

Hupenyu hwacho hwakasara hwaita
Life got flipped
Manyama mire nerongo
turned upside down
Ooh mhamha
makandisiya ndichiyamwa
you left me a suckling
Hupenyu hwacho hwakasara hwaita
Life got flipped
Manyama mire nerongo
Turned upside down
Ooh mhamha
makandisiya ndichiyamwa
you left me a suckling

The picture painted her is quite sad. A mother’s love is priceless.

    ?Random brought me here…

I love the music. But what language is the lyrics (from ‘eight years on’)?

I entered the chorus into google translate:

    Hupenyu hwacho hwakasara hwaita
    Manyama mire nerongo
    Ooh mhamha
    makandisiya ndichiyamwa

… and it told me that the language was ‘Shona’ (which I’ve never heard of), but whereas your translation is:

    Life got flipped
    turned upside down
    Ooh mama
    you left me a suckling

    Google claims it says:

The rest of the life is over
    Meat stands tall
    Ooh mamma
    you left me to suck

Don’t get me wrong: I trust your translation, not google’s (machine translation is still very much in its infancy).

Perhaps it’s not ‘Shona’ at all?

Good looking out… note to self I should add the languages to information…
and yes it is Shona one of the 16 Official languages spoken in Zimbabwe
The language is also not without a bit of complicated story as it was an amalgamation of several dialects which makes its translation very region specific.
I have an article which attempts to explain the origins of the language Of Shona Origins: Language and Tribe

As for the translation, all things considered Google’s translation is not too bad for machine translation hahahaha mine has the benefit of understanding the nuances as Shona is more ideomatic than literal …e.g Manyama mire nerongo could literally mean the meat stands tall as Google suggests but them its an ideomatic phrase used to just express that things arent as they should be….
Oh I have actually translated 5 of my favourite shona proverbs and maybe it might help illustrate the nature of the language Tsumo: Shona Proverbs
