Compliments of the New Year… we go again? I feel this is the first day of 2025.. this business of a year starting in the middle of the week seems wrong… WTF.. but January the Monday of months will also end with a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, so it balances out in a weird way. ☕

If you are having coffee with me, I would tell you that over the years, I have picked up a curious habit where instead of wishing people happy birthday, I wish them Happy New Year, because technically one’s year begins on their born day… right? Happy Birthday to this third rock from the sun, as it spins round and round taking as on another dizzy ride and all that it will bring, hopefully good things.

Speaking of good things, its been raining, somewhat sporadically but still raining. When it rains, it pours, as if its catching up on all the rain we have missed out this rain season, which has resulted in a lot of flash floods and its resultant challenges. One of life’s greatest ironies, might be how our bodies only float easily, after we drown… Even will all the warnings to not cross flooded rivers, people underrate the strength of flowing water, leading to tragic instances.

If you are having coffee with me, I would tell you that after the rains, the world looks greener… a fortuitous sign, maybe this wont be another drought year, maybe the harvest will be good and we will be a little less food insecure… I remember the words of a headmaster from primary school who began each school year with the proverb, “A good beginning makes a good ending”.

I never much cared for the school or the headmaster, but I did find the proverb insightful and it has stayed with me over the years, providing guidance on how I would set the pace for each year to come.. I have never been one to make grand resolutions, but getting one’s ducks in a row makes sense, even if I don’t get how putting all your eggs in one basket, equates to a risky decision making… I mean, ducks in a row, could be taken out with one bullet by a skilled sniper… wouldn’t that be similar to putting all your ducks in one basket?

If you were having coffee with me, I would tell you of a viral meme that is regarded of as one of the top memes of 2024, Chill Guy. The digital artwork and internet meme was first posted by artist Phillip Banks on the platform formerly know as Twitter on the 4th of October 2023. The artwork attained its virality from August 2024, after it was posted on the clock app aka TikTok and inspiring a meme coin cryptocurrency.

Phillip Banks distanced himself from the crypto-currency and copyrighted the image as well as issuing take-downs for unauthorised merchandising of the artwork. Drama aside the meme has generally been regarded as something which encourages people to seek self-help, remain stress-free and approach life with a “laid-back attitude”… in short Chill Guy.

If you were having coffee with me, I would tell you that I identify with the Chill Guy… life is crazy and unpredictable, even the best laid plans can end up in smoke due to events you could not have predicted.. they say, “Man Plans and God Laughs“. We cant see the future but that should not stop us from living in the moment.

I had so many “plans” for the past year, they didn’t work out, but interesting pathways opened up, here I am still and that’s what counts the most… Its so easy to lose sight of the wins, when you look at the times you faltered in the face of the winds of unpredictability… while you cant control the turbulence, you can adjust your sails..

 So 2025 we go again…
