Of Coffee And Back to….

If you were having coffee with me, I would ask you if there is a standard number of days into the year, in which it would still be acceptable to wish someone a HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Here is a clip of my dreadful brothers and welcoming you to a 2019.

If you were having coffee with me I would tell you that on New Year’s Eve we did the thing we do every year and sang the sun up into the New Year.

dread singing the sun up

Because the New Year’s sun wont rise until we sing it up…..

We are seven days into the New Year and it doesn’t feel that new; feels pretty much like the last one but older and starting off like a video game cranked up to the hardest difficulty level.

video game difficulty level

If you were having coffee with me I would tell you that January is usually known as an austere month after having overspend during the holiday season resulting in the dreaded January Disease.

January disease

Compound this with a runaway economy were prices can go up by +300% from the last time you checked but strangely enough people’s salaries (for those fortunate enough to be employed) remain the same; corporates seem to be looking out for number one and the government seems to be only good at making promises, threats and compromises.

Earlier in the past week a local beverages firm, Delta Beverages released a communication about changing their pricing to accept only hard currency and not the surrogate bond currency or local electronic transfers as they needed to source forex to pay for imported supplies.

The long arm of the government was prompt to point out “the error” of their ways on how such a move ran counter productve to the multi-currency economy that the country runs and how if they were facing challenges, they should have honoured their social contract first and approached relevant stakeholders first instead of just making public announcements (that unsettle and confuse the citizens)

Delta corporation and RBZ agreement

If you were having coffee with me, I would tell you that the government seems to have “difficulties” coming to an understanding with the striking doctors but find it curious that it had to take over a month before any sort of progress had been made yet they resolved the Delta Corporation case within 24 hours one wonders about priorities…..

Politicians should use government hospitals

If you were having coffee with me I would tell you growing up one of the things I hated the most were those back to school adverts especially at the beginning of the year reminding you that the holidays are over and its time to learn…….

Image result for back to school chalkboard

Sending kids to school is also quite the hustle with the way the pricing of school uniforms an fees is set up and all the accessories that go with, and it doesn’t help that some schools only accept uniforms from the accredited suppliers (read that as the more expensive ones like its some sort of cartel)

If you are having coffee with me, I would tell you, it also looks like school teachers are also gearing up to start a strike of their own maybe schools wont even open on schedule….

But hey in a country with 10% formal employment everyone is a hustler and entrepreneurs will tell you that while you only see difficulties they are seeing opportunities and raking it in; sometimes I think the whole country  has misplaced priorities, look out for number one seems the order of the day..

Compliments of the New year;

Of 2018: The Year Thats Mine

Hello 2018

hello 2018

The first page of a new chapter…..

Depending on the parameters, any day, technically speaking, from a strictly empirical point of view could be the beginning of a New Year……

Convention has it that 1 January is the beginning of the calendar year….

January calender

Happy New year and welcome to my first blog post for 2018, and in time for the first supermoon for the year

A local Zim musician Tehn Diamond shared a twitter challenge to giveaway wallpapers with a personalized power word.

My word was Mlilo and this is my wallpaper

Mlilo

mlilo wallpaper

Mlilo means fire in Xitsonga language (also Moto in shona language)

Mlilo moto wallpaper

Fire is my totem amongst strangers I know who my tribal kin are….

Its uncommon to have an inanimate totem, imagine telling people that your spirit animal is fire. (you can read more about my totem in Zimbabwe here)

I am guessing that if dragons were real they would have been my totem and our praise song when you were announcing us in public or thanking us or just being super respectful or down right flattering; you would begin…

Introducing:

The first flame,

His most royal spontaneous combustor,

Consumer of all leaving nothing but ash,

Burner of things,

Bringer of light,

Chaser of darkness,

Giver of warmth

Keeper of secrets

and Maker of Heroes

I guess if we were characters in game of thrones we would be House Targaryen

what keeps me warm the fire inside

Fire fascinates me, fire burns and all fires burn its something you learn for yourself

And the year before that . . . .

Of Memories Of Christmas Past

Christmas is the one holiday I look forward to all year round. I see some shops have started advertising Christmas Specials, so its not too early to talk about the festive season………

You know its almost Christmas when you walk into a shop and they are playing carols and of course a Santa Claus post where you get your photo taken, sitting on s red suited guy’s lap. This is mostly kids stuff. I don’t think have had my photo taken with Father Christmas since I was in kindergarten. It used to be such a big deal and you would get a gift box too, I don’t remember if our parents paid for it, if they did they never said and we never thanked them for it.

Note to myself: This year I am definitely having my photo taken with Santa or I just might be Santa my beard is practically all white I could pull off the look.

Its weird how we grow up and things that seemed to be super important when we were toddlers suddenly have less significance. All the thoughts we lose on our way to becoming adults. I can remember past Christmas holidays from my childhood as if they happened just yesterday but I can hardly remember my last Christmas. If baby me met grown up me I wonder if I would like or even recognize me…..

Growing every Christmas we got new clothes, new shoes and then a gift probably a toy or board game. You would wake up on Christmas morning and you could practically smell Christmas. Christmas smells like my mum’s baking; a multi-coloured cake we called The Rainbow cake. I thought it looked a touch hideous but my grandmother loved it to bits so every Christmas it showed up; it was tradition.

I remember grandma telling me the story of how a saviour was born in a stable and lay in manger and how we must not forget the true meaning of why we celebrate Christmas,

nativity manger scene

if it was not true then why do all the cows and goats wake up facing east, on Christmas mornings they watch the sunrise; to honour a king.

look east

I never saw them actually do this and grandma used to laugh when I asked and she would say I was not waking up early enough…. I haven’t seen them do it but I tell the story anyway…. Just like how at midnight of the New Year, if you listen very carefully you can hear the New Year starting like a distant rumbling or earth quake….

Christmas seems like an affair for children but don’t be fooled, the older generation are moved beyond words at a chance to see their children with their children’s children and possibly their children’s children’s children since it now seems we only ever gather like this at funerals….

Writing this post has put me in the festive spirit and this Christmas I will definitely put in the effort, I’ll even buy cards and post them, I’ll dress up in a red jump suit and give gifts, I will tell stories and create timeless memories……

Stay festive

PS and of course a barbecue…..
