Of Missed Calls Madness

We’ve all been here, right? You’re engaging in the radical act of living your life, when you look at your phone screen. Multiple Missed Calls.

missed calls notification

From the same person, all spread generously within the last time you looked at your phone.

To the serial multi-dialer “What exactly is your line of thought all during all this?”
Are you under the impression that if you dial one more time, like a rubbing a genie’s lamb I’ll magically answer the phone?

Let’s establish some ground rules for digital etiquette. If I haven’t answered the first time and second time it is generally due to one of three things:

1. I am busy: I am currently otherwise engaged.

2. I am indisposed: My phone is not on my person, it’s in another room which I am not, and I am too far to hear it ring (it’s possible I forgot to take it off silent mode)

3. I am avoiding you: I didn’t miss your call I watched it ring and silenced it… I didn’t reject the call because you’d know I’d seen it and declined to answer and would instead rather you think I am sorry I missed your call… well I’m not sorry.

What’s important to note is that none of these scenarios are remedied by calling my phone repeatedly, it doesn’t make the situation “more important” it just makes your name pop up on my screen with an increasing probabilityof not being answered.

There is, of course. If my mum calls me multiple times in a row.. . I will sprint through traffic to return the call hoping it’s not an emergency.

The solution? Send me a text.
A text message is a polite, and civilised way of saying, “I have an urgent need for your attention.”and It allows me to evaluate the level of crisis and respond accordingly.
Please and thanks.

That might work for you. But for “some” people, texting is the last thing they’ll ever check. So if I want/need to get hold of them, I have to call them. and if their phone is on vibrate, well, I have to hope multiple calls will get their attention.
Of course, I only do this with “one” person 😉

      There’s always exceptions to the rule 😂 😂 😂
Personally I think anything more than 2 missed calls then someone better be dying (not that I want anyone to die 🫢)

My late boss, Director Stephen Museki would say one should not call him multiple times as if the Director had gone with their kidney ! Every time I see multiple calls this rings in my mind.

      Wise man.
Whose kidney did I go with indeed for you to be calling me like that, and if I have your kidney just call the hospital and get an ambulance 😅🤣

This is funny and coincidental. I was a the automotive repair shop yesterday, dropping my car off for spark plugs. While doing the drop off business, the phone rang. The employee let it go to voice mail as she was dealing with me. Because of call display, we could see when they called back. Four times in five minutes. Phones make people feel entitled to immediate access, something I don’t love. Deep sigh.

Ah yes… spot on Michelle!!! We live in an era of immediate access, with instant messaging tools that have given us an entitlement to people’s time…

Maybe because I grew up in the tail end age of landlines and snail mail, I appreciate how you could not have 24 hour access to a person’s time unless you were physically present.

if you missed someone you sent them a postcard and it could take weeks before they got it and weeks before they sent back a reply.. and in case of emergency you went to the post office and sent a telegram STOP
