Of Army Of The Dead: Movie Review

Army Of The Dead

Army Of The Dead is a 2021 zombie heist movie directed by Zack Snyder. The movie project was announced in 2007 following the commercial success of Dawn Of The Dead (2004) also directed by Zack Snyder which grossed $102.3 million worldwide against a budget of $26 million. The movie got stuck in development for over a decade until Netflix acquired distribution rights form Warner Brothers in 2019.

Army Of The Dead was released digitally on Netflix on May 21 and went on to became one of the most-watched original Netflix films with an estimated 72 million viewers over its first four weeks.

The premise of the movie is a heist during a zombie apocalypse  in Las Vegas… A zombie apocalypse in Las Vegas should, stay in Las Vegas…

When I was contemplating whether to watch it or not, I asked Twitter… I got more people saying don’t watch, I watched it anyway; research purposes.

The Good

It has a very interesting opening sequence, topless zombie showgirls wreaking havoc in casino as as a cover of Viva Las Vegas plays…. If you want a signal that the movie doesn’t take itself too seriously and you shouldn’t either that would be it…. I mean it’s a Zombie Movie what would you expect…

I bet you wouldn’t expect to see a Zombi Tiger and a Zombie Alpha with a cape riding a zombie horse….

Zombie movies have been done to death lol but in this one Snyder was trying to do something a little different and not just have a bunch of  slow moving undead, hungry for your brains…  A heist during a zombie apocalypse, you don’t see that everyday.

The Bad

I mentioned it has an interesting opening sequence but totally unnecessary you could fast forward the first 20 minutes of the 2 hour 28minutes long movie and it would still make sense… You could shave off a lot of other fluff and it would be a short and fast paced zombie flick…

Instead you end up with characters who don’t seem to have much depth and we don’t really connect or feel the anguish Dave Bautista’s character Scott Ward has in trying to bond with an estranged daughter or even the love interest angle… Heck I think some of the zombies had more character than the humans…

The Ugly

The ending is very… Zack Snyder, leaves you with a funny feeling of what did I just spend the last 2 hours 30 minutes watching… There is a hint of a loop be it a time loop or just a metaphor of the cycle of death and rebirth, that’s deep, but it is never fully elaborated….

Maybe one should wait and check out the two prequels, a film titled Army of Thieves and an animated series titled Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas, scheduled to be released on Netflix

I cant believe Dave Bautista turned down a role in director of Guardians of Galaxy James Gunn’s ‘The Suicide Squad‘ to be in this … but wait, he got to play a lead role, got to work with Zack Snyder and got paid more in Army of the dead… good for him.

Final thoughts

Yeah I dont know about this one, interesting spin on the zombies… I totally understand why people would tell you not to waste your time but if you want to waste your time there’s worse way to spend it… I mean its a zombie movie, what depth are you thinking you will find?

Have you watched Army Of the Dead or would you watch it?

  1. I watched it! It was mindless fun hahaha XD Can’t say it was a good movie but it was entertaining! Too bad the characters weren’t fully developed… Either way I’ll be watching the others when they come out, will you?
