I finally watched Spider-man Into The Spider-Verse which was released to movie cinemas December last year.
First a brief review about the trippy animation.
Advances in tech and software have enabled graphics to render animations with as close to realistic detail and motion as possible, animating every strand of hair on a character’s head things like that but at the cost of a more individualistic feel, as automated processes try to approximate reality.
When this Spiderman animation was created they were not trying to be realistic, they wanted you to remember you are watching a comic book thats come to life on the big screen. Words pop up on the screen, wavy lines mixed in to depict movement and of course I loved how you could like literally see the Spidey sense tingling in squiggly lines
They went back to the animation drawing book on this one, borrowing from stop animation where multiple still frames are combined to create animation.

And now we delve into what could potentially be the realm of spoilers, if you haven’t watched the movie, this is the part you might want to consider to stop reading, if you were reading this post to figure out if you should watch the movie, then go watch it
If you are wondering if you should keep reading then I suggest you keep reading because seriously how much can one really give a spoiler to the Spiderman story, basically some guy gets bitten by a radio active spider, develops powers and because with great power comes great responsibility, he saves the city again and again and again, because only one thing stands between the world and oblivion and that’s him
Except for one thing, this movie is not about the Peter Parker spiderman origins story although I laughed in the first few minutes of the movie when they referred to Spider-Man 3 when Peter Parker gets ‘infected’with venom but we dont talk about it.
This movie is the origin story of ‘another’ spiderman, and you thought there could be only one huh? (unless of course you are familiar with the Marvel Spider-Man comic world and already know all this and so much more, or you watched the movie!!!….)
This story is about a Brooklyn teen, kinda socially awkward being at a new school and all, trying to find his place in the world. He even tries to get himself kicked out of school by failing and the teacher figures out that the odds of getting every single answer wrong is if he knew the correct ones
He gets bitten by a radioactive spider and mostly just gets stuck to things, people’s hair, the roof, chandeliers and on occasion can go invisible and shoot sparkly zappy things out of his hands but not on command
…..and it turns out he is not the only one because hello the existence of parallel universes and when mixed with goobers and particle colliders well things kinda get crazy and you have;
Spidergwen, Spiderman noir, Penni Parker and Peter Porker the Spiderham, you have to ask yourself how many spider people are there?????
Nicholas Cage as the black and white Spiderman Noir from the 1930s followed by the wind, brings back the retro with some dark humour no pun intended
…. all they want is to go home…… kinda like E.T. really.
I found the movie hilarious and mix it up with a banging soundtrack I think it was a lit flick with some great morals and with a PG rating its definitely something for the whole family though I think it has its rather dark moments, there’s death in the movie, the pain of loss is not only recurrent, its underlying and the spiderman character it seems is forged in crucible by the always getting up…
I laughed a lil too much at the part when Miles meets Gwen and she says I am Gwanda and then adds its African, I am South African, well perhaps because I know Gwanda as a place here in Zimbabwe.
And there’s a Stan Lee cameo, I am going to miss him.
So one last time whats this movie about, its about becoming the best version of yourself, anyone can wear a mask, and you pretty much know everything else…
My single regret is I did not watch it in a movie house, I am sure I missed out on experiencing the full range of the cinematic effects, don’t ask me where I got the one I watched, its probably not quite legal definitely not ethical and I might be a pirate, and danger has my number on speed dial I always answer when it calls…..
