Of Black Cake

Black Cake is a Hulu original series produced by Oprah Winfrey and  adapted from a novel of the same name by Charmaine Wilkerson. It premiered on Hulu on 1 November 2023.

The premise of the story follows two siblings learning about their mother’s true past, from a series of recordings she left for them to listen to, after her death…

It’s a compelling and emotive watch that pulls you into its web of captivity, as you unravel Covey’s past littered with dark secrets in a story essentially about family and identity….

Similar to the Caribbean rum fruitcake usually made around the Christmas season, Black Cake is blackness, darkness, sweetness, beauty found in unexpected places and just desserts. Two siblings are tasked with listening to 7 recordings – a posthumous revelation of the her true life story, where they learn everything they thought they knew about who they are, is a lie.

They listen to one recording each episode and each recording always drops a bombshell crazier than the last, until you are wondering along with her kids who their mother really was and if they can make peace with the revelations, some which are of the sort someone would take to the grave – which she did.

The casting for the lead actresses is stellar, Mia Isaac as Coventina “Covey” Lyncook is sweet and endearing while Chipo Chung plays the role of the older Eleanor Bennet perfectly in sync, seeming like it’s the same actress aged up or down using makeup and CGI effects.

The stunning visuals and cinematic shots are made even better with a catchy and haunting soundtrack which not only captures the pop-culture of the period the series is set but enhance the atmosphere. I compiled a playlist of some of the music from Black Cake

The series is at its strongest when its doing the flashback scenes of Coventina Lyncook’s earlier life story – The present moments don’t seem as a fleshed out slowing down the plot pacing because the only compelling story is being told in the flashbacks.

While Coventina’s character development undergoes a full arc, the others she encounters are one dimensional caricatures, existing only to make a point of how people behave, even the characters who enjoy longer screen time still never get to have their motivations fully explored.

It’s a bit of a heart-wrenching watch, the things Covey goes through – abuse, racism and misogyny, one understands why she had decided to keep her past hidden – you get to experience her burden of being unable to heal from the trauma unshared and the tension her revelations create..

Some moments can really have you in your feels – heartbreaking, its got so much sadness and tragedy.

Black Cake is not just a tasty dessert it is, a layered confection that takes days in the making, fruit soaked in rum, a brandy flavour and burnt sugar giving it a dark colour – sweet, dense and intoxicating, from a recipe that’s a cultural hybrid with undertones of colonial heritage infused into the Caribbean identity.

Fun Fact: Chipo Chung is a Zimbabwean actress who was also in the series Silo.

Have you watched it… thoughts?

Why cant there be one service to rule them all, cause there’s just way too many okay that would end being monopoly which is bad — but why dont they cross-share content and pay each other royalties, it would be a win-win i think 😂 almost makes one miss good old tapes and DVDs it didnt matter video club you were a member of.

Oh tell me about it. “Exclusive” content is killing the appeal of streaming. They all need to join together and give us what we want instead of this mess we’re currently in.

I like your fruit cake comparison. You’re really good at this. I noticed you’ve been doing a lot more (?) reviews lately. Is this the direction in which you want to take your blog, or does it just happen like this organically?

Its organic – I usually review whatever I watch or read – so I guess must have been doing more of that lately 🤔 and in past year did less of fictional writing, 2023 wasnt an inspiring year for creativity, so TV and books were an attempt at escape… hmmm damn.
Plus also I keep getting people suggesting things to review- the pressure!!! 😂
      good talk

Kaleidoscope should be next, that’s if the creativity is still lacking, but then again the creativity you place in the reviews is beautifully scripted… Amazing take on it. One of my top 20 series of the year

Thank you so much… I put a lot of work into the reviews I end up feeling like such an encyclopedia because of all that I learn about a movie or series as I research for the review.

Kaleidoscope you say? Havent watched it.. Hahaha and of course you can tell if I have watched something or not because I alwyas have a review ha!
I like the idea of the mixed episodes in Kaleidoscope… might make it my weekend binge.

The review requests mean that people trust your judgement and they enjoy your takes – great stuff!
But, don’t let it pressure you. I enjoy reading reviews from people that I engage with on different topics, but the Coffee posts of yours are my personal favorite.

hahaha well I try to make sure that I do the stuff I like doing… so if something isnt my cup of tea I wont watch or read – like generally due to my escapist relationship with fiction – I avoid based on real life type content… but point me towards fantasy and I am there in a heartbeat 😂

Thank you.. Ithe coffee posts are my fave as well, they have become a signature post and I chuckled the other day when I ran into a random stranger on the streets who referred to me as the coffee guy 😂…. actually I really should get myself branded coffee mugs and milk the heck out of the merch 🤔

Great reviews as always. I haven’t heard of this one but once again your reviews give me a strong reason to watch it. I’ve often been drawn to films/series about the bonds between siblings. Such films often hit me in a personal way because they remind me of my bond with my own brother. This appears to be one of those shows. It’s also produced by Oprah who I absolutely adore. The plot reminds me a lot of “The Colour Purple”. It also told the story about the bond between a pair of black sisters. Recently, I loved the film adaptation that came out last year. Here is why I loved it:
