Coffee With Chapter 42
If you were having coffee with me, I would welcome you to my tangle of words and tell you that in my journey around the sun, its officially New Year… I think it’s more fitting that we should wish each other Happy New Year 🥳 on our birthdays, a more honest reflection of our individual journeys.
If life begins at forty, that would mean I have been living for two years, I wont complain, but it could be better. According to the Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy 42 is the answer to life the universe and everything else.
What are birthdays but an excuse to have cake… but I think it’s a scam because every slice of cake just makes you older, so from now I refuse to have cake on my birthday so I stay young forever and no, it’s absolutely not because I had to choose between having cake and making responsible decisions.. Adulting sucks I do not recommend. Zero Stars.
On my 21st birthday, I got a key, it’s a custom that’s supposed to symbolise adulthood and independence, unlocking new opportunities, responsibilities, and possibilities in life. It’s only a symbolic gesture, as legally, when you turn 18, you are regarded as an adult capable of getting yourself in and out of trouble and the consequences therein.
My brother polished it till it shined with a secret formula which should probably be patented, bottled and sold. Couldn’t believe it’s been 21 years since I got this key, which doesn’t do much except stay in a drawer to tarnish and reflect, maybe even judge the doors of opportunity I should have unlocked with it. It would be more practical if you were given keys to the gate or house or a car…
If you were having coffee with me I would ask you about the keys to the city that heroes are given… What exactly are the keys supposed to open? City Hall? Bank Vaults (you know to make sure all the money is there, of course) people’s houses? I mean, heroes wouldn’t go around abusing the trust they are given after all right?
Just like how my neighbour leaves me their keys cause I am usually home and I would never sneak in their house and lounge on their comfy La-Z-Boy recliner and sip on their expensive whiskey that tastes like it was aged for 21 years in oak barrels… How do I know this? Oh that’s a good question, we can just put it down as a testament to my creative palette.
If you are having coffee with me, I would tell you that I might act fine, but it feels like it’s the autumn of my soul… My father, may his soul rest in peace, died 30 years ago, and of course, a part of me is always wondering what he thinks of the man I became and the shoes that he left behind. In retrospect, the shoes looked bigger when I was 12, and now, now I am the age my father was when he died…
How time rushes by, the years merging into each other, you blink and another year is past, as the greys add up, but at least now they no longer reflect wisdom beyond my years…
I can feel my metabolism shifting down gears, growing soft in the middle even though the rest of life is hard… been thinking about how to burn belly fat and with the internet spying on us, that is probably why everywhere I go I see adverts for callisthenics tailored for men over 40…
And of course, if you cannot find a tot glass to pour out birthday libations, you can always use an egg cup… how’s that for a life hack.
