Of Secret Invasion

Secret Invasion Review Becoming The Muse

Secret Invasion is a Marvel miniseries based on a 2008 Marvel Comics storyline of the same name. It was created for Disney+ and is the 9th television series in the Marvel Cinematics Universe.

The 6-episode miniseries follows Nick Fury as he tries to save humanity from a secret invasion by a shapeshifting alien race called Skrulls.

As a Marvel production it comes with the trademark cinematography that you expect the Avengers to pop up any second and do Avengers things.

Two words: Nick Fury.
Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury is a role most Marvel fans want to see further explored.

Don Cheadle did not hold back for his James Rhodes character which is one of the most solid perfomances in the series. Emilia Clarke as G’iah and Kingsley Ben-Adir as Gravik deliver a stellar perfomance.

My favourite character from Secret Invasion is Olivia Colman  as Sonya Falsworth who could easily take the cup for being the most enigmatic character in the MCU cool fierce and fearless, you never know if she is going to shake your hand, offer you a drink or torture you.

The miniseries has a lot of potential but it doesn’t quite live upto to all it could be… It has a capable cast who are not utilised fully… Imagine having shape-shifting humans pulling off an invasion of the body-snatchers type of secret invasion where anybody could be an alien….

…But instead of having intriguing conspiracies and plot-twists they settle for a rather outlandish mission of vengeance hinged upon Nick Fury’s promise…. Also we never get a plausible explanation as to why Nick Fury did not keep his end of the bargain.

Nick Fury isn’t Nick Furying … could be that the Nick Fury after the snap is not the same the Nick Fury from before the Thanos snap, even some characters mention this, for a small small moment I thought maybe perhaps he might have been faking being weak to take his opponents by surprise but nope plot twist…

Why oh why didn’t he just call for his all-powerful friends the avengers to come handle things? Oh no he just had to be Nick Fury, even when he is out he is still in…

If they wanted to keep the show grounded, *Spoiler Alert perhaps we shouldn’t have had skrulls with Avenger type powers displayed in set pieces of amusing and rather unconvincing CGI.

Watching the series does not increase or improve your understanding of the MCU.. If the Marvel Cinematic Universe were a university degree then Secret Invasion is that elective course which you don’t need to take.

The series raises dishes out some hard hitting truths about humanity around the thought provoking themes on refugees, xenophobia and our capacity to accept those who are different from us, and the blame game that has the world always on the verge of the next world war….

Great premise, stellar cast could have been so much more as a drama on Nick Fury the way WandaVision gave us the more domesticated side of Wanda and Vision…

It’s a fun watch but the world wont stop if you don’t watch it…

Fun Fact: had a mini heart attack when I thought I heard my name mentioned and I had to check the subtitles and double check the cast… Samuel Adewunmi plays Beto not Beatonbut it sounds so close.

Have you watched it? Is it something you would watch? The trailer is more interesting than the actual mini-series.
