The Night Agent is an American spy thriller series created by Shawn Ryan and based on a novel of the same name written by Matthew Quirk. ( just added to my TBR) The show premiered on Netflix 23 March 2023 and stars Gabrielle Basso as Peter Sutherland…
Peter Sutherland only has one job, to babysit a phone in a basement of the Whitehouse which hardly ever rings rings… and when it does and Peter gets embroiled in a conspiracy involving the highest offices of the government.
The Good
If you loved the hit series of yesteryear 24 with Jack Bauer then this has as a similar sort of fast paced crime and espionage feel. I mean in the opening scene a bomb goes off on a train…

It will keep you on the edge of you seat wondering where the story is going and like all good conspiracies everyone is suspect. Its an absolutely bingeable series that can keep you up all night…
Gabrielle Basso delivers some solid acting as if he is auditioning to be the next Jason Bourne, Jack Reacher, Jack Ryan, Jack Bauer and James Bond all-rolled into one, in the role of Peter Sutherland.
The supoorting cast also compliment each other Luciane Buchanan‘s character Rose Larkin has great chemistry with the lead and Hong Chau does a memorable portrayal of the no-nonsense President’s Chief of Staff Diane Farr.
The Bad
Need I say that you will need to leave your disbelief way over there due to the implausible nature of the premise and the way everything kinda gets thrown at you:
Villains with rings, villains without rings, car chases, guns that don’t run out bullets, guns that don’t have bullets, a Bonnie and Clyde vibe killer couple, a chief of staff with a striking hairstyle…
But the plot is plotting at the speed of a runaway freight train so you don’t have enough time to question things, just shake your head and keep watching…
The Ugly
The Night Agent isn’t ground breaking, you know exactly what you are getting into and that there’s someone leaking sensitive information trope has been done to the death but hey it’s the backbone of espionage and spy stories.

While it tries to throw curves and twists along the way, the resolution is rather unsurprising and if you have a healthy intuition you just might be able to predict how it plays out.

It will keep you instensely occupied but when you are done, its easy to forget….
Final Thoughts
The Night Agent has ten episodes with a running time averaging 45-56 minutes of bingeworthy content that its unsurprising that upon on release it spent 4 weeks at the top of Netflix Charts. Netflix has been said to have found its 24 with the series already renewed for a second season.
Interesting connection: The series gave me 24 vibes and the main character is called Peter Sutherland, with Sutherland being the last name of the actor Kiefer Sutherland who played Jack Bauer in 24…. coincidence?
Have you watched this? Is it something you would watch…
I don’t think this is something I would watch, but I enjoy your movie reviews. Are you doing any that are on Amazon Prime?

Thank You!!
Lets see from Amazon I am currently watching Citadel…(still got two episodes to go)
So yeah I am in an espionage rabbit hole (no pun intended because my next review is Rabbit Hole hahaha) and all three have pretty much a lot in common.

I’m going to watch Rabbit Hole. Watch “You Don’t Know Me” with Samuel Adewunmi on Amazon. Limited series British crime drama. Lots of twists and turns. Absolutely outstanding performance by Adewunmi. His monologue in the courtroom is fantastic.

My first thought was “man, he looks like a generic jason bourne”. My second thought was “crap, he looks young!”.
When did that start happening, sigh…

I had the same second thought. I’m feeling rather ancient. 😄

Just did a quick Google check the Jason Bourne is from close to 2 decades ago…. Explains why when I made the reference someone looked at me like I might as well as have been talking about dinosaurs 😂
The clock ticks rather loudly ⌚
