Of Clubhouse: Apples and Oranges

Apparently there is a new platform on the Cyber Space or rather we have recently just learnt about it

Clubhouse

The only clubhouse I know is the dictionary definition for a building having a bar and other facilities for the members of a club.

From what I gather from the internet Clubhouse is some sort of audio-chat social networking app which is somewhat like tuning into a live podcast but more exclusive since you join by invitation.

Clubhouse has been around since March 2020, when it was launched by Silicon Valley entrepreneurs Paul Davidson and Rohan Seth. In May 2020, it had just 1,500 users and sometime in mid-February of 2021 Elon Musk hosted an audio chat on the app with Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev and of course it blew up

Currently Clubhouse has over 2 million subscribers and is valued at $1 billion.

What’s all the Clubhouse fuss about?

The fact that you need an invitation to join gives it a certain virtual elitisim.

Now compound this with the additional fact that they had not rolled out Android support means that currently only iPhone users have been enjoying this app…..

Apples and Oranges

I am from a country, where in some circles, owning an iPhone is considered a status symbol, an achievement… a declaration that I have arrived, in sea of Android phones… How can one not? iPhones generally cost more than Androids and additionally they use a lot of mobile data and wifi so even if you could afford one, fully enjoying all its cloud features might prove tricky.

Now it seems people have adopted an attitude that owning an iPhone might also be a measure of intellect, engagement and civility…

People will gloat about having mature conversations on Clubhouse and throw slander at how when Android folk join Clubhouse it will go to the dogs…. Cant one just enjoy something without having to Lord it over people…. one gets what they give

apple ios vs android

I sometimes wonder if the first page of the iPhone manual says: Congratulations on choosing to make this life-changing purchase and then proceeds to give you tips on how to let people know that you own an iPhone in every conversation…

Can you tell I don’t own an iPhone? Haha well, I, I, I can’t even afford a decent Android phone, let alone a brand new one. Would you believe at my big age I have never owned a brand new phone? Its also probably why I have so much phone drama too, check out articles on some of my phone escapades:

How to not buy a phone

Apples and oranges I dream of a world where people are not judged by their choices in fruit arent they all fruit at the end of the day?

comparing apples to oranges

PS I would probably pick an Android over an iPhone if you want me you can find me in the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse chilling with the clowns waiting for my turn on the jumping castle.

Android user here as well, I don’t feel the need to own a $500-800 phone. I use a prepaid phone, for the longest time sans internet but with times changing put the internet on my phone, I am not one of those people glued to a phone 24/7 either. I think the elitist culture of clubhouse is ridiculous, I work with people that complain about having to live paycheck to paycheck yet have no problem getting each new iPhone 🙄

The idea that owning a much more expensive phone, is the initial red flag for a poverty mentality. And so are other reasons. Thanks for sharing.

Have you ever seen a meme showing how a “broke” will wear designer expensive clothes and accessories while the one who has really arrived usually dresses simply … (even when it’s designer it’s the less intrusive design were only those who know will know…)

It’s really sad that Zimbabweans think owning an iPhone means you have made it in life or you have certain intellectual capabilities that android users don’t possess ,it’s sad to see. Great read, I enjoyed it

I really don’t get how we arrive to such a level of thinking.. Maybe owning an iPhone infuses one with certain “airs” and the only way i can really know is by owning one🤣🤣 just remembered someone who was justifying selling roses at very “exclusive” prices…

I will stay in my lane but don’t make fun of me for it, is that too much to ask for?

I never heard of this app, but it did sound intriguing at first. Then, after reading that it’s only for Apple users, I decided it was not for me. I refuse to get an Apple product because of how snobby I think the company is.

Haha i thought that was just me, I feel the company is snobby and they in turn pass on some of that to their more impressionable users and here we are you have people making fun of you simply because your phone does not have a particular feature instead of saying hey let’s use something we all can use… I thought these gadgets were supposed to make it easier to communicate and interact not set is apart….

It very interesting what you say and I agree, personally I’m an Android user by choice and many in tech are simply because it doesn’t lock you out but I don’t judge others by their choices. Shame some do.
    I hope you’re keeping good 🙂

If i remember correctly i think you use Linux too, yes?

Also people can be so pretensious like don’t you get tired of being on such s high horse… High horses are dangerous, can’t act responsibly🤣
