I like to behave like I don’t do a countdown to my birthday but as someone mentioned (stares at them as they read this) I have casually been dropping hints about my New Year. I mean think about it, we really should celebrate New Year on our birthdays, what says you? For those who missed the memo, my birthday is on Monday the 22nd of February and its been declared a public holiday, woohoo.
In the grand scheme of things it wont change much as we are still under lockdown, but hey I can pretend everyone is celebrating mine birthday with me. Why is my birthday a public holiday? Because the day before it is a public holiday falling on a Sunday, so the Monday is a holiday as well.
If you were having coffee with me I would tell you that today 21 February is a public holiday, National Youth Day also known as Robert Mugabe National Youth Day. 21 February is the birthday of late former president and he used to commemorate it with festivities themed 21st February Movement. Ironically it was first celebrated in 2018 after the aged statesmen had… “resigned” from power.
Its not lost on me that National Youth Day falls on the birthday of a man who ruled the country for over 30 years. They tell you that the future is in the hands of the youth but when will the future begin when for 41 years since independence in 1980 it’s been the same names reshuffled over and over again, because they happened to be there during the independence struggle or they are connected to those who were.
Being young in Zimbabwe is to wish that I could travel back in time to before independence so that I could be a part of the liberation struggle, so I too could claim my stake. When my father was my age he had a wife and a beautiful family with a home in a leafy suburb… and all I have, is a blog and a watch my father left, to see the time run out….
If you were having coffee with me I would tell you that I took it upon myself to write a post on the Covid Vaccine: Myths, facts and opinions and play my part in sharing factual information so people around me can make a more informed decision about getting the shot or not, if you haven’t check out my previous post.
Our Vice President was the first person to get vaccinated with the Sinopharm vaccine as part of the vaccine roll out in a move that was hope to inspire confidence in the deployment. Yeah I don’t think they have quite managed to do that as some folk were speculating that maybe he just used a placebo injection like normal saline…. I mean how would we really know?
South Africa also launched its vaccination programme after a bit of a bumpy patch and again the President was the first to get the Johnson and Johnson vaccine. The South African government announced it offered its consignment of AstraZeneca vaccines to the African Union to share with countries on the continent not afflicted by the 501Y.V2 variant.
Meanwhile in Tanzania, the president still insists that there is no COVID in the country although there is an increasing number of “pneumonia” cases and some travellers from Tanzania are testing positive for the virus. Amid warnings that the country is seeing a deadly resurgence in infections, President Magufuli called citizens to three days of prayer to defeat unnamed “respiratory diseases”.
“Maybe we have wronged God somewhere,” President John Magufuli told mourners at a funeral for his chief secretary, John Kijazi. “Let us all repent.”
And what is truth? Truth is a weaponized commodity, damned if you do, damned if you don’t.
If you are having coffee with me, I would tell you it must be fun being president, how else do you explain how it seems once someone becomes president they will try everything to make sure they stay there… If walls could talk, the stories the government buildings would tell
Our other Vice President (yes we have two have of them) is in adulterous entanglement(s) with married staff from his office. Some might say well, he himself is not married, so what if he drinks two cups of virility enhancement concoctions and romps about with his office staff? (pun not intended) Well, he is the Vice President and we expect better from him, how will we know he can run the country when he can’t keep his affairs in order (ok this one was intended) also sexual harassment in the workplace?
If you were having coffee with me I would tell you that Zimbabwe lost a young dancehall musician Soul Jah Love, he was 31 and got a hero’s send-off, buried as a provincial hero. He lived a rough life, made wonderful music and was like those stars that shone the brightest yet shortest.
Its national youth day and I am wondering do the young have to die before anyone listens to what we have say?
