The old guard movie review

The Old Guard is a 2020 Netflix movie directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (known for directing the films Love & Basketball, The Secret Life of Bees and Beyond the Lights) and written by Greg Rucka (comic book writer, screenwriter, and novelist) What do you get when you mix an action comic writer with a director which a penchant for emotive flicks?

You get The Old Guard a pseudo superhero story adapted from a comic book.

Charlize Theron(the only person I recognised from the starring cast) stars as Andy / Andromache of Scythia. KiKi Layne (never seen her before in my life but definitely one to watch out for) as Nile Freeman, Matthias Schoenaerts (no idea who this is but looked vaguely familiar) as Booker, Marwan Kenzari (no idea as well) as Joe, Luca Marinelli as Nicky and Chiwetel Ejiofor (oh I also know him too, great actor but his role was absolutely wasted) as James Copley.

The Plot

There’s an elite group of soldiers, with an extremely rare skillset, lets just say, they are really hard to kill and they kick ass and take names…

The plot isn’t quite rocket science, its pretty much, what you see what you get; there’s a bit of a plot twist but nothing absolutely unpredictable…

The Old Guard brings an emotional element to the existential crisis of being immortal, immortal life crisis maybe, sacrifices have to be made, and its apparently a lot harder than it seems and of course dying always hurts…

Final thoughts

It’s a shoot-em up flick with emotion and not just blood, bone and smoking guns even though it has its fair share choreographed blood and gore… Charlize Theron’s character’s weapon of choice is an ancient battle axe and they take no prisoners.

And from the way it ended, a sequel is definitely somewhere on the cards…

Have you seen it? Would you watch it? I am definitely waiting for the sequel, the storyline has franchise potential.

    If they keep it up this can be as good as the Fast and Furious franchise. I said the same thing about a sequel! Andy Is everything!!!
    It felt like reading the first chapter of the book and just as you settle for the nice part to begin, it ends. I did enjoy it. Though.

      You are so right, it was more like an introduction, you wont even feel that its a 2 hour long flick and it ends just when thing get interesting ….
      yep.. totally an enjoyable movie

    I totally enjoyed this movie. I didn’t know there may be sequels? Very COOL!! I’m easily entertained, so I thought it was a good movie with an interesting theme!

      Its an enjoyable movie and caters for not just the action fans but those who like a bit more…..drama?
      Oh there will be sequels and Charlize Theron is set to reprise her role which means Andromache of Scythia is not quite done yet… and I am guessing from the end scene that the other lost immortal who was buried in an iron maiden casket will be out to unleash some mad revenge upon the world, I actually hoped she would make an earlier appearance in the movie, guess they saved that subplot for the future.

    I really enjoyed this movie!!!
    With the way it ended, a sequel is definitely coming and thinking about it makes me want to cry 😅

      I saw an interview with Charlize Theron being asked the movie and it sounds like the sequel is more a matter of when than if

    Chiwetel’s character was so wasted, he really didn’t have to be there but then if you’ve watched Salt (Angelina Jolie) he played a similar role but with more responsibility so maybe he has a thing for such characters 😂 and if there’s a sequel maybe we’ll see more of him.
    I enjoyed the cinematic and action in the movie but it felt like an intro, laying everything out before the drama, (if there’ll be a next one) I didn’t know most of the characters too lol but the whole idea of not dying was fascinating to me…
    “Are you the good guys or bad guys … Depends on the century” I liked that and the scene when they were protecting Andy while escaping from Maverick..

    Ps: the scene where they are gunned down in that room (before they knew it was a trap!) that scene is therapeutic 😂

      In Salt Chiwetel’s character had presence in this one it was somewhat superficial and didnt seem to have very good backbone for someone who was an ex- CIA guy maybe the grief of losing his wife slowed down his thinking hahahaha..
      In the sequel it seems he would more like Charlie in Charlie’s Angels finding them assignments and covering their tracks..

      Oh there will definitely be a sequel its simply a question of when, and Charlize Theron is excited to reprise her role as Andy (so maybe she wont die just yet…)

        The first two guards were ladies and they fought through centuries in wars fighting for humanity but all they got back was not fair ,they were burned at a stake ,tortured because people thought they were witches since they could not die . One of the ladies was put into a metal coffin and was thrown into the ocean , she was drowning for over 500 years imagine the pain everyday without dying .

        you are right that aspect of it would get one in their feels
        dying again and again and again is no fun and will obviously drive one a more than a little crazy and wanting revenge even though after all those years perpetrators to the suffering are all dead….
