And that is how 25 September will now be known as Dolly Parton Day. This year, the day carries particular poignancy as the Queen of Country passed away on 25 August 2026.
Nashville was among the cities to formally embrace September 25 as a day to honour Parton, with Mayor Freddie O’Connell proclaiming it “Dolly Day.” Following Parton’s death in August 2026, the September 25 observance has spread rapidly, with California becoming the first state to establish it as an annual Dolly Parton Day. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine also issued a proclamation, while Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal declared September 25 Dolly Parton Appreciation Day across Manhattan.
Tennessee already had a Dolly Parton Day on 19 January, her birthday proclaimed in honour of her 80th birthday and recognising her contribution to music, culture, philanthropy and the state she called home.
