The Librarians: The Next Chapter Season 2
The Librarians: The Next Chapter is a fantasy adventure spin-off series to The Librarians film and tv series. Its first season of twelve episodes, premiered on TNT on the 25th of May 2025 and the second season premiered on the 2nd of August 2026.
Having introduced the various new librarian characters and their different skillsets and areas of expertise the team set about their work of containing dangerous artefacts facing different challenges including their worst fears and an ancient magician…
The Good
The Librarians: The Next Chapter is the sort of television series that knows exactly what it is, even when it occasionally has no idea what it is doing… thats what you get in a fantasy adventure with magic, curses and enchanted magical artifacts that can grant you wildest dreams and also corrupt them… Most episodes unfold independently as a case/curse of the week so you can enjoy each episode separately.
Season 2 has the team acting as Librarians and not people who stumbled into the world of Librarians by mistake, they are a team and behave so, each holding their own in their field of expertise Connor (Bluey Robinson) the historian, Lysa (Olivia Morris) the tech specialist, Charlie (Jessica Green) their Guardian and Vikram Chamberlain.
Vikram (Callum McGowan) remains the chaotic centre of the group, whose devil may care attitude is an armour to hide the pain and loneliness of being lost in time , but doing his best to fit into the modern world.
In the 12 episodes each character gets a moment to run point and thus have a chance at some solid character development, facing not only monsters and enemies but their very own fears allowing them to grow as a team. One of my favourite episodes is when a bodyswap mishaps has the characters inhabiting each other’s bodies in turn, an interesting test to the actors range as they must act the way other characters usually act.
Occasionally Christian Kane’s Jacob Stone features in some episodes where he steals the scenes with his signature wit and rugged charm.
Dominic Monaghan delivers an impressive and hilarious performance as Merlin the legendary wizard friend of King Arthur and the episodes he features are some of the more memorable ones.
The Bad
The series is a bit formulaic, they go out to a magical emergency, try to figure out the cause for whats happening, apply some wrong assumptions and then eventually solve the mystery and safely archive the magical artefact in the library…the end.
Its like the writers asked “How much mythology can we cram into twelve episodes?” and the answer was yes…. Some of the episodes don’t quite land and others are more like magical filler.
The Ugly
For the most times the fantasy imagery is decent but sometimes ambition gets the better of it where and it struggles as if the CGI was rendered on an old laptop by an over-enthusiastic teen…
The show sometimes dramatically undercuts its fun tone with darker story arcs that come across as tonally inconsistent to its more whimsical fun fantasy adventures.
Final Thoughts
The Library The Next Chapter is comfort fantasy TV that’s easy to watch, and the second season makes for a very good case to keep the library open for another season.
