An Ode To Home
Home is….
Laughter and smiles
Because why cry when you can laugh
Saying grace before every meal
Because every plate is a date with a miracle,
Earned by sweat, tears and calluses.
Prepared with love, gratitude and hope,
Today we had a bellyful,
And tomorrow will care for itself.
When the dish is too salty,
Will joke that Lot’s wife dipped her fingers,
Oh that pillar of salt is coarse of course.
If it’s too well done,
Congratulations,
That’s what you get for hiring the mother of dragons
Dracarys
Every time the lights come back on,
We shout magetsi adzoka
Because its always a gamble
If the power will come back on
Soon, later, much much later,
Maybe never at all,
But we will worry about that when that happens.
Once upon a time our national anthem
Sounded like a chorus of generators
But thank whatever you hold sacred
That solar power is oh so silent and clean,
Imagine if dreams ran on kerosene?
Home is where the question How Far?
Is not a geographical inquiry of how distant you are
But its someone following up on a debt you owe
And the answer is always Pakaipa
Meaning Tough, you will get it when you get it
We are so full of contradictions,
We claim to be the most literate
And are quite articulate
yet our actions are quite the opposite
We say we want change
But we keep doing the same things
And the ones who promise a difference
Become exactly what they replace
Home is where we mean well
But that’s what paves the road to hell
Well-meaning
And that’s how hell becomes,
a place called home.
At least its not cold.
So smiles and laughter
Because why cry when you can laugh?
And we’ll see what comes after.
