Walila – Bongeziwe Mabandla

Spotify randomly suggested a new track for me to try based on my listening habits and that’s how I came to have Walila on repeat…

Walila is a song by Bongeziwe Mabandla an acclaimed South African singer-songwriter and visual artist known as the “enigmatic spirit of African Soul.” He describes he’s style as “urban traditional African folk”  a fusion of traditional Xhosa music, acoustic folk, soul, and modern electronics.

Infused with wit, dramatic storytelling, and raw sincerity, Walila is a playful but deep meditation on the karma the truth that every deed circles back to its source. Inspired by thoughts around injustice and consequence, the track imagines the moment when someone is finally confronted with the impact of what they’ve done.

Walila Lyrics and Translation

Walila walila
He’s crying
Walila kodw’ ulila kancinci
But his crying is little
Walila walila
He’s crying
Walila kodw’ ulila kancinci
But his crying is little

Kakade hay’ ubufunan’ apha kum
After all, what did you want from me
Kakade hay’ ubufunan’ apha kum
After all, what did you want from me
Bekumnandi bekumnandi
It was nice
Uthethela phezulu
You were loud
Bekumnadi bekumnandi
It was nice
Uthethela phezulu
You were loud

Hayi bo nana
What now child
Kwenzekeni Kudala ndilindile
Tell me now What happened
Iphi na ngoku owawume ngayo
Where is all that you leaned on
Mini yakho ifikile
Your day has come
Andinandaba mna
I don’t care

Noba angalila makalile
Even if he cries, let him cry
Alile kodw’ ulila kancinci
He’s crying but he’s crying a little
Walila walila
He’s crying
Walila kodw’ ulila kancinci
He’s crying but he’s crying a little

Kakade hay’ ubufunan’ apha kum
After all, what did you want from me
Kakade hay’ ubufunan’ apha kum
After all, what did you want from me
Bekumnandi bekumnandi
It was nice
Uthethela phezulu
You were loud
Bekumnadi bekumnandi
It was nice
Uthethela phezulu
You were loud

We nana nan’ uzobaz’ abantu
Boy, you will respect people
Nana namhlanj’ uzobaz’ abantu
Boy, you will respect people
We nana wen’ uzobaz’ abantu
Boy, you will respect people
Nana wen’ uzobaz’ abantu
Boy, you will respect people

Walila walila
He’s crying
Walila kodw’ ulila kancinci
But his crying is little
Walila walila
He’s crying
Walila kodw’ ulila kancinci
But his crying is little
