Becoming The Muse

Fall is a 2022 survival thriller film directed and co-written by Scott Mann. Fall stars Grace Caroline Currey and Virginia Gardner. Fall was theatrically released on August 12, 2022, by Lionsgate Films on a 3 million dollar budget and grossed 16 million at the box office.

This is a movie about Falling. In the opening sequence a trio of adrenaline junkies have a mountain climbing incident which results in one of them falling to their death. On the anniversary of that death the remaining duo go on an epic adventure to climb a 2000m decommissioned television tower….

The Good

It is intense!!!! You would never think a movie can keep you holding your breathe throughout its entire run time, Fall does this. It feels like an escape room movie except outside.

The movie has some stunning visual shots and the director’s choice in opting for shooting live sequenceson a 60 foot mountain platfrom instead of CGI lends a very realistic persepective to the scene that can bring out the fear of heights in you… I don’t have a fear of fights but I do have a fear of falling ha!

The movie has great pacing with the more intense scenes interspersed with dialogue scenes giving you a break from the dizzying heights while additionally character building in a way that will make the plot twist.

Fall also captures the story of content creators and how sometimes they appear larger than life for their fans but hey anything for those 60k followers.

The Bad

Can a movie be said to be too intense? Because when you are ¾ into it, if you are me you will check the time and wonder how much of this you can take and how the movie can be possibly resolved in the remaining run time. 🤔

The plot is mostly predictable, playing out in a formulaic problem and solution approach where each segment of the movie is about solving a specific problem, how do we find water, where do we go to the bathroom, how do we get down?…

The Ugly

While for the most part the movie has good pacing, given the attention to detail the director had gotten us used to, the last quarter of the movie felt rushed towards a conclusion that wraps up too neatly to be satisfying.

If you have an extreme fear of heights you might want to give this one a miss as it will give you vertigo, this wont be a thriller survival movie, it’s a horror.

Final Thoughts

This movie was put together with heart and it shows, you will not even feel that you basically spent the movie’s run time watching only 2 characters, it’s a survival movie that touches on life’s basic fundamentals… what drives us?

Fun Fact: The look of the fictitious B67 tower in the film was inspired by the real KXTV/KOVR Tower radio tower in Walnut Grove, California, which is also over 2,000 feet high and one of the tallest structures in the world.

The movie made use of “deep fake” technology to keep it on a PG-13 rating by digitally redubbing swear words into more acceptable ones, instead of reshooting the scenes which would have been a costly and time consuming venture.
