Of Whatcha Say, Hide and Seek

Over a decade ago, artist Jason Derulo made the charts with his debut single Whatcha Say.

Wh-wh-wh-what did you say?
Mm whatcha say?

I was this year old when I discovered that the parts of the song that I found most striking were sampled generously from a 2005 track by Imogen Heap called Hide and Seek.

Imogen’s version is definitely more haunting, listening to it gives me goosebumps and I love it. Then I watched the live version below where she does what she does on the keyboard she makes her harmony and I am in awe.

I am not surprised to find out its her favourite song. The instrument she is using is called a vocoder… reminds me of when we were kids singing in front of the fan listening to our robotic sounding voices, I almost want one of those but then I remember I can’t play the piano 🙈

  1. Jason’s version is truly an homage to the artist Imogen. While she sang Hide & Seek live, I could feel the pleasure she felt playing it. I will have to look up this artist to see what else she brings to the table. That vocoder is pretty cool. I did the fan thing myself as a kid. This was before iPads and GameBoys. We created our own fun.
