The Beast in Me is a psychological crime thriller television miniseries created by Gabe Rotter. The 8-episode series premiered on Netflix on 13 November 2025.
The series follows a grieving author, Agatha Wiggs, struggling to write her next book when her new neighbour turns out to be a very enigmatic character, Nile Jarvis. On a quest to find exciting material for her next book, the author gets entangled in twisted mind games with her neighbour, who may or may not have killed his wife…
The Good
It has the tense atmosphere of a who-dun-it with a slow-burn build-up fuelled by a character-driven suspense.
The Beast In Me hinges upon the strong perfomances between the lead characters Agathie Aggie Wiggs and Nile Jarvis, played by Claire Danes and Matthew Rhys respectively. The two actors deliver an emotive and compelling performance as kindred souls, realising they are more alike than unalike, with a touch of darkness about them.
Something about Agatha Wiggs performance made me think of Carol Sturka from the Apple series Pluribus… They are both best-selling authors who, despite being able to create relatable writings, have rather abrasive characters that rub off most people the wrong way.
The Bad
The Beast In Me isn’t a groundbreaking series and feels familiar like a murder mystery story, it plays it safe and predictable without leaning into its darker themes which would have made it more compelling.
The show’s pacing is rather erratic, and the middle episodes are a bit of drag with subplots that don’t particularly add to the narrative.
The Ugly
I am not sure I quite like the stereotype where writers usually female are portrayed as unstable and emotionally distant, with drinking problems and a mild disdain for their readers… Makes one wonder if authors are domesticated psychopaths, one wrong thought short of blowing up the world with an atom bomb…
Final Thoughts
The Beast in Me is a psychological thriller that’s generally well-executed and compelling, anchored by stellar performances and psychological tension.
