The Africa We Want: Agenda 2063

AGENDA 2063 is Africaโ€™s blueprint and master plan for transforming Africa into the global powerhouse of the future. It was initiated to shift focus from past priorities which include decolonisation and political independence toย inclusive social and economic development, good governance, peace and security and other concerns. It was officially launched in May 2013 when African Heads of state signed the 50th Anniversary Solemn Declaration.

Itโ€™s a grand Pan African Vision of An integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens, representing a dynamic force in the international arena, with Agenda 2063 being the framework set to achieve this within a 50 year period from 2013 to 2063. Agenda 2063 โ€” “The Africa We Wantidentifies seven aspirations, with rolling implementation plans.

The seven aspirations are:

A prosperous Africa, based on inclusive growth and sustainable development;

An integrated continent, politically united, based on the ideals of pan- Africanism and the vision of

Africa's Renaissance;

An Africa of good governance, democracy, respect for human rights, justice and the rule of law;

A peaceful and secure Africa;

An Africa with a strong cultural identity, common heritage, values and ethics;

An Africa where development is people-driven, unleashing the potential of its women and youth; and,

Africa as a strong, united and influential global player and partner.

We are currently in the Second 10-Year Implementation Plan of Agenda 2063, also known as The Decade Of Acceleration running from 2023-2033.

The Africa We Want

When we talk about the Africa WE wantโ€ฆ who is the WE being talked about? Yes itโ€™s a grand vision, and it claims to be people-drivenโ€ฆ but 12 years into Agenda 2063 and so far, to the ordinary person, its coming across as those campaign promises made by politicians that either never get carried out or end up benefiting a select few.

Granted, its still early in the timeline and the first decade, Convergence was more about identifying priorities and outlining strategies, this decade should see an acceleration in the implementation of Agenda 2063, with next decade focusing on the impact.

If I had been consulted for my two cents, I would have said the first aspiration on the Agenda should have been the one about good governance and democracy, cause without capable institutions and transformed leadership in place, achieving anything else might as well as be winking in the dark. ย ย ย

What do you know of Agenda 2063?

Had it not been that I looked it up for WinterABC, this would have been one of those things I might have briefly seen in an old newspaper I was shredding to make toilet paper, then flushed it away with water collected from a burst water pipe left unattended for weeks โ€ฆ I donโ€™t want idealistic aspirations, I want running water.

Whats the Africa you want?
