Of The Secret Life Of Migration Dreamers

The Secret Life Of Migration Dreamers

It is a truth universally accepted, that there is no one as secretive as someone planning to migrateโ€ฆ

Visa applications are a costly and stressful affair, people prefer not to let anyone else know, except their closest of people and sometimes, not even them. Youโ€™ll find someone selling off their assets to raise money which you will later realise was for plane tickets, when you see the social media updates.

Some say, its because they donโ€™t want to jinx things, others say its because its such an iffy process they donโ€™t want to raise peopleโ€™s expectations, incase the plans fall through. I know someone, who made a big to do that they were leaving the teapot shaped country. They packed up everything and even gave away a couple of things, then threw a party like it was 1998, cause well, it wasโ€ฆ

Their Visa was denied on some technicality or other and in the time it took for them to redress and raise funds for another application, their then-girlfriend got in the family way and soon after, a shotgun wedding. Stepping up, meant getting a job which put the migration plans on hold until things got settled, which they never didโ€ฆ here they still are, raising a beautiful familyโ€ฆ

Thatโ€™s why you shouldnโ€™t count your chickens before they hatch.

Some say, telling people your business, that you are planning to go overseas, can fuel envy in the village people, who instead being happy for you achieving the Zimbabwean Dream, will pray for or plot your downfall, maybe even invoke some witchcraft which could perhaps explain the way some peopleโ€™s migration plans, fail, in bizarre circumstances, a sudden illness, an accident on the way to the airport, house burning down, alongside all the certificates and travel documentsโ€ฆ could be just plain old bad luckโ€ฆ but people speculate.

Anyhoo, One of my fanciful dreams is to travel around the world, see interesting places and write about it over a cup of coffeeโ€ฆ โ˜•

As a child, I never ran away from home, I may have ran back home and away from school…
As an adult, every day I want to run away from my country, wiping away the dust from the covers of my passport, I wonder where I would even begin to run to…
Anywhere I suppose.
Anywhere that’s not here.

There’s a saying that Loose lips sink ships kinda fits there especially if one were taking a cruise ship… (and village people seem to have jinxed that route as well)

Good luck with your plan to leave. I will remain here calling those who are “weary and heavy laden” in the diaspora to return home.

A preacher once said, “The devil won’t ginx anything for you as long as you keep your intentions to yourself. He’s not God”
