Of Coffee With Confafa

Coffee with confafa Becoming The Muse

If you were having coffee with me, I would welcome you to my tangle of words and ask you to feel at home… Have some cornflakes. How do you take yours with hot milk or cold milk?

Corn flakes in a tea cup

As I struggle to finish my cup of cornflakes, I would ask how you feel about corn flakes. I asked on the platform formerly known as Twitter how people rate cornflakes and the majority of people who responded did not care much for the breakfast cereal. I was glad to see I wasn’t the only one who found them to be rather tasteless, nothing is wrong with my tastebuds.

If you were having coffee with me I would tell you that cornflakes were invented in 1894 by John Harvey Kellogg, a doctor and health reformer who ran Battle Creek Sanitarium in Battle Creek, Michigan, USA. The cereal was created as a way to provide a simple and nutritious meal for patients at the sanitarium. The corn flakes were purposely made to be bland tasting.

Kellogg believed that eating plain and bland food would prevent indigestion and also suppress sexual desires, which he considered unhealthy and sinful.

The present day version of corn flakes would probably have John Kellogg turning in his grave. He patented his recipe after a legal dispute with his brother who had wanted to add sugar to the cereal to make it more palatable for a mass market. So there you have it, if you think corn flakes taste like cardboard, its because the recipe evolved from a bland ideology.

A box writen corn flakes

If you were having coffee with me, I would tell you that back in boarding school, we tried creative ways to make corn flakes tastier, like adding peanut butter, crushed biscuits, fruit jam and well any other snack you had. Sometimes it worked, other times it was horrible. We also made up a word confafa, which initially described the confused cereal goulash and then later evolved to describe a state of confusion.

Confafa is that confusion which results in chaos… Its like when you make a U-Turn and then make another U-Turn, you are not going anywhere except round in circles, that’s confafa. It can also be used to describe political turncoats who change affiliations as if they are changing socks depending on which side their bread is buttered.

If you were having coffee with me, I would tell you that fans of some local artists feel disappointed in their decision to support or endorse the current ruling party, especially those who had previously seemed more aligned to the struggles of the common man as illustrated in the track Ndaremerwa by Holy Ten where he rapped about the struggles of trying to make it in a world that never gave one a break and all you yearned for was to have sausage for breakfast….

If you were invited to join the president for breakfast…. Would you go? Can one turn down the president if they are invited to have corn flakes and sausage at the State House?

If you were having coffee with me, I would tell you that we have our presidential polls on Wednesday. Its crazy but it doesn’t feel like in the next few days we will make a decision that will set the course for the next five years… One does not need a crystal ball to see who the people’s choice will be….

Is a done deal Zimbabwe elections

But of course, its illegal to announce the results before they are offcially declared and the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, ZEC has 5 days to announce the results. Not sure what they will be doing for five days in this digital world… anyway you know what they say, its not the voting that counts, its the counting of votes that counts.

announcement of election results

I ran into an interesting comment on the internet about how the candidate that constantly demands to see the voter’s roll and keeps citing constitutional irregularities rarely wins elections…

A sample ballot paper was shared on the internet and the curious layout makes for a fascinating tale.

2023 Presidential ballot paper

11 Presidential candidates with only female candate. The real contest is between two contenders and I would even guess that some candidates are simply there to maintain layout purposes….. history shows that the current president favours the top right corner of the ballot paper.

2018 Presidential ballot paper

If you were having coffee with me, I would tell you that the current electoral cycle has been largely peaceful, although there have been sporadic incidences of unrest. The streets have been safe to walk except for Friday evening when there was a spot of Temple Run…

Apparently unruly police recruits were beating people in the city and the police are investigating the incident which resulted in19 Police recruits being arrested over the unruly conduct.

unrul conduct by police recruits in Harare CBD

If the Assistant Commissioner’s statement is not a smoke screen to hide what really happened, then it’s also a bit worrying as to the calibre of police and their professionality…

Whats been going on in your neck of the woods?

Greetings, Beaton! I’ve never heard of cornflakes in a mug. I have had them long ago in a bowl with cow’s milk. I rarely ingest cow’s milk now, and I no longer eat any commercial cereals. Corn seems to be always grown in an unhealthy manner so I avoid it, except I do buy organic popcorn kernels and make popcorn once in awhile for when my kids and I are watching a movie.

“… its not the voting that counts, its the counting of votes that counts.”

It does seem that way. I don’t know what to believe concerning elections. A lot goes on in secrecy. If they were more public about it, I would feel better about believing what is being told to us.

Good to see you are still blogging. It’s been awhile for me. Just so busy!

      Hi there!!!
Good to see you on these streets…. Yep we still here, not going anywhere if can help it.

If one does not have a bowl…. one has their cereal in a mug hahahaha….

Popcorn has become the staple food for movie watching🍿 📺

When something is not 100% transparent…. people will doubt and question. Actually am at a point where I am even re-thinking if democracy isnt a scam to make us feel like we are a part of the decision makers and that our choices matter.
I dont support coups, but I can also understand why some countries go that route… “you cant play chess with someone will to set the board on fire”

Great to connect and thanks for visiting

I absolutely hear you. All the world being a stage, who’s to say we’re not being played with that, too.

I like the ballots with the images of the candidates. We don’t do that here and I think it’s a good idea.

I’ve never heard of cornflakes with hot milk. I would skip it – I react to corn so I mostly avoid it. I’ve had hot milk on Wheetabix, back in the day. I do like hot cereals.

Having the images of the candidates is super cool… now if only the pics came out looking sharp… some claim that they purposely blur up the resolution for the candidates except for the preferred one 😂

Wait is corn flakes and hot milk the standard??? I care not much for cornflakes though I much prefer oats…

      Thanks for visiting

I started my cereal journey with Lucky Charms and Fruit Loops. SO flavorful! (Full of artificial stuff and sugar, of course.)
As I moved to adulthood, I started eating more grown-up cereal and actually really started liking conrflakes. When I lived in Europe, people had cereal with warm milk. I liked mine cold. It’s easier and I don’t taste the milk that much. Plus, the cereal doesn’t become soggy as quickly. I’ve actually been craving the basic cornflakes without the sugar glaze. Sometimes they come with slivers of almonds. That’s a nice touch.

Breakfast with the President? I’d go. If I liked them, I’d hope to impress them and maybe get a better job or something like that. If I hated them, I’d take the opportunity to tell them they suck.

I like cornflakes. I also like most simple cereals that don’t have a ton of sugar added. I fully agree that Kellog would be rolling in his grave if he knew what had been done to his stuff. And I prefer just a little cold milk. Enough to wet the flakes and that’s about it. I’m eating cereal after all, not drinking milk 😀

Back in boarding school we would mix cornflakes, cerevita, creamer and sugar. It would be tasty and crunchy but on the outside it was never appetising. So I guess its still confafa, as one would want what the sort of food would taste like

Reading this enforces what politics look like across Africa.
This is just too close to similar .

Good luck with the elections that will most.likely bring a candidate you all expect but still hopeful for a miracle.

I havent watched news back here for a little while now to keep sane .
There must be a balance i will report when i find something interesting.
