Of Hagrid Forever

The Harry Potter books and movies have a fond place in my memories and part of that is because they showed me it was possible to have fantasy and magic co-exist with the real world. Lets face it, Harry Potter made magic cool, I mean someone can say “I wish I could attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry” and it would not seem weird at all…. I might even know someone who tried to send an application to Hogwarts too… not me though.🤡

Hagrid was one of the characters JK Rowlings created on the very first day of sitting down to write Harry Potter. Of course, makes sense, he was the one entrusted with watching over Harry Potter when Voldemort killed his parents and he delivered him to the safety of number 4 Privet drive. By the time Harry Potter attended Hogwarts, Hagrid was the Keeper of Keys and Grounds. Part of his hob being to let you in and out of Hogwart, which also entailed leading the first years upon arrival at Hogwarts.

Now what would Hogwarts be without the gentle giant ? Not the same!!!

With each book and movie we got to learn a bit more about the backstory of Hagrid and how he connected to everything and revealing tidbits he wasn’t to suppose say punctuated by his Shouldn’t have said that, I should not have said that”

I read the first of the books in the Harry Potter series way before the idea of the movies had even come out. When I finally watched the movies I was mind blown by how they managed to bring the books to life (and how wrongly I had been reading Hermione’s name 😂)

Robbie Coltrane as Rubeus Hagrid held down the role and owned it so much he will forever be Hagrid. On the 14th of October woke up to the news that the actor had passed away at the age of 72. Its almost like he knew, when he did this interview at the Harry Potter 20th Anniversay Reunion, that his words that would be comforting Harry Potter fans world wide.

“The legacy of the movies is that my children’s generation will show them to their children. So you could be watching it in 50 years time, easy.
“I’ll not be here, sadly. But Hagrid will. Yes.”

Rest in power gentle giant, Hagrid lives on.

  1. B,

What a beautiful tribute you’ve penned for the gentle giant. ❤️ (And good to know I’m not alone in the mispronunciation of a certain witch’s name! 😂) Rob will be missed. He truly embodied Hagrid in a way I don’t think any other actor would. He was, indeed, the perfect Hagrid.

Btw, what House are you in? 🤔

  2. I first heard of Harry Potter while on a plane. The person next to me was reading the first book.I thought it was the name of an author. 🤭 I can’t imagine any one else but Robbie Coltrane playing the part of Hagrid. Having said that, when I watched Harry Potter I suspended disbelief and Hagrid became more real to me than Robbie.
My young granddaughter, who wasn’t much of a reader back then, worked her way through all those books. That is why I say that it is JK Rowling who made Harry Potter and magic cool.
