Temper
After I finished reading Prey of The Gods GoodReads suggested I read Temper also by Nicky Drayden
Temper is Nicky Drayden’s second novel published in August 2018.
Temper will take you down the rabbit hole of science, technology and fantasy into a domain where magic meets tech and yet the age old fight of good versus evil still exists.
Set in Cape Town in an alternate version of Africa, once again Nicky skillfully blends magic, science, folklore and religion into building a world of virtue and vice where there are four types of genders and (almost) everyone has a twin.
After birth, twins undergo a ritual where its determined which twin gets which of the seven vices, for each vice a twin gets their twin gets a corresponding virtue. The twin with the least vices is considered the greater twin and while the one with more is the lesser twin and will most likely grow to end up living their life in the slum part of the city while their better tempered twin live luxurious lives.
The story is told in seven chapters, each chapter named after one of the vices and virtues: Vainglory, Envy, Duplicity, Doubt, Lechery, Charity, Temper.
There’s a lot of secrets and intricacy going on in this book, like for example twins cannot go a certain distance away from each otherwise a proximity break will result in a whole lot of pain, possibly, death even.
Reading this book is an exhilarating ride although at some point it feels like the story is spiraling out of control, your head will spin you will have questions, you will wonder if you missed something in this story of two brothers and seven vices.
