Review: Knives Out Is More Than a Clever Murder Mystery | Time

A private detective Benoit Blanc played by Daniel Craig is hired to consult with the police to determine if any foul play happened and his investigations reveal how the family members all might have motive to kill the head of the family… so now who did it?

*Potential Spoiler

During an interview with Vanity Fair Rian Johnson may have revealed a potential trade secret about how the Apple brand has strict rules for on-screen appearances of its products.

“Apple, they let you use iPhones in movies, but — and this is very pivotal if you’re ever watching a mystery movie — bad guys cannot have iPhones on camera.”

So you may want to check out the phones people are using and maybe you just might figure out who is who …

Knives Out' director reveals why bad guys don't use iPhones

I tried to keep track of the phones I saw people were using but I was never ready for the twist.

When you are watching the movie you might think you have it figured out and that instead of a murder mystery; its actually a will they get away with it or not … you could be right but then again, I will bet you, just like me; you wont see it coming.

Hidden Code… Once the mystery is solved, the expression on the portrait changes.

Daniel Craig aced the eccentric world famous detective with a head full of anecdotes although I found his southern accent a bit much maybe they tried to make him exactly unlike a Sherlock Holmes character.

…but let me assure you this: my presence will be ornamental, a respectful, quiet, passive observer. Of the truth.

I loved the nurse Marta Cabrera  played by Ana de Armas and thought her performance stellar especially her “condition” which made it impossible for her to lie.

It was refreshing to see Captain America Chris Evans not being a goody two shoes but rather the family black sheep, someone you would really love to hate

Interesting Tidbits

Rain Johnson was influenced/inspired a lot by Agatha Christie mysteries and this movie is a modern day whodunit.

The name Harlan Thrombey is taken from a 1981 Choose Your Own Adventure whodunit, Who Killed Harlowe Thrombey?

The title was taken from the 2001 Radiohead song “Knives Out”

“Obviously, the movie has nothing to do with the song … That turn of phrase has always stuck in my head. And it just seemed like a great title for a murder mystery.”

Final Thoughts

Knives Out is well crafted murder mystery that will have you at the edge of your seat trying to put together the puzzle of what really happened and if you haven’t watched it, do yourself a favour and watch it now.

If you have watched it, I am curious to know your thoughts….

  1. Hey..
I just watched the movie a week ago. I really liked that while it can be categorized as a murder mystery it was a really uniquely created film that gave us something to think about and managed to maintain humour

    1. I absolutely agree although it is borrows heavily from the murder mystery trope, its a somewhat different type of movie especially when compared with most of the stuff out there, its in its own crazy nook and even raises some very important societal questions.
      Thanks for dropping by

  2. I clicked this post fast enough when I saw your topic … I like your how you are able to word your reviews really fascinating!
Okay, first I have watched the movie – thrice! and will watch it again to check out the phones. I did notice the hidden code too. The cast was generally fantastic … I found Daniels accent annoying at first but didn’t mind it the second time I watched it. I like how Chris was the bad guy I feel taking such roles will help him shed the superhero persona fast. The caregiver did a good job I’ve never seen her in any movie before… Do people in real life actually have such extreme reactions to lying though? I didn’t expect the turn of events, I was shocked. To sum everything up the movie was good 🙂

    1. wow, you say the nicest things about my reviews ♥♥
I think I might just watch the movie again this time to see if I missed on anything … e.g. I read somewhere that the great detective noticed the blood stain on our favourite nurse’s shoe the first time he set eyes on her so he always knew

I tried Googling if such a thing happens when you lie and guess what all the search results I got where asking in reference from Knives Out, so the movie made it a thing, its a thing now hahahaha

      1. You will love Extraction then!!! It’s so amazing how real it all looks and sounds. Not like I know what a battle with guns a blazing sounds like in person, just seen many a war movie with my hubby and even though this is a different kinda war, it’s really well done! I LOVE Chris Hemsworth! Excellent movie in my opinion, just more of a guy film! Lol 😉
