The story follows an office worker whose ordinary day turns upside-down when there is a major heist at the pension management they work.

It’s a heist series… and the opening episode sets it up as a high-octane crime thriller with gripping edge-of-the-seat stuff..

Sophie Turner who rose to fame as Sansa Stark in Game Of Thrones, delivers a praiseworthy performance as Zara Dunne, giving Steal its emotional weight and keeps the stakes grounded, gritty and personal. Zara is a complicated mess of a character with great potential, stuck in a dead-end job and parties a little too hard to numb herself from the stagnation in her life, vulnerable yet tough, confused yet resilient… a survivor.

Sophie has great screen chemistry with her co-stars Archie Madekwe’s Luke  and Jacob Fortune-Lloyd’s DCI Rhys, adding depth to their uneasy alliances and conflicts, which drive the series.

Beneath the heist action, there is a thoughtful commentary on wealth inequality, corporate greed, and ethical compromise in the financial world where systems favour elites and marginalise ordinary workers.

With only 6 episodes averaging 50 minutes its a fast paced bingeworthy watch.

Steal borrows the formulaic architecture of the heist genre, which can give it a predictable feel and while there’s some twists, they come across as contrived.

The show has a strong opening but loses some of its momentum in the middle episodes, which prioritise style over substance.

The villains are rather one-dimensional without any compelling motivations for their actions, they don’t have any names except for code names like Glasses, London and Sniper, without so much as an explanation.

While Sophie Turner may have managed to shed the “Sansa Stark shadow” from Game Of Thrones, her character isn’t particularly likeable, making some questionable judgment calls that make it hard to sympathise with the consequences, she parties so hard she gets nosebleeds when she’s hungover…

Steal takes a jab at the systemic corruption in the financial world, where the execs make obscene amounts of money from the sweat of the working class.

Steal is a compelling thriller that’s worth watching if you enjoy British crime dramas and speculative heist storytelling. There’s been no official word on a second season, but the finale leaves just enough promise and unanswered questions to justify a return.
