Matobo African Gin

Introducing you to Matobo African Gin.

Matobo African Gin is the signature gin crafted by Comrades Beverages, based in the City of Kings, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe and draws inspiration from the Matobo balancing rocks.

The ingredients for the gin include Juniper Berries, Angelica Root and Coriander. To give it its unique Zimbabwean identity, Matobo African Gin is infused with Baobab and Zumbani which lends it a zesty zing the blends history with botanicals. I had the honour of chatting to Bheki Ncube one of the crafters behind the brand when I attended ZITF and put together this informatial.

Their exhibition was quite the hit, the president of Zimbabwe and the president of Kenya who was the Guest of Honour at the ZITF stopped by to marvel and at the innovation and craftmanship displayed by Comrades Beverages. If I were a betting man and you were partial to gin, I would tell you to watch for Matobo African Gin, it will take you places.

Matobo African Gin is infused with flavours which make it a most excellent choice for cocktails. Comrades Beverages has a partnerships with cocktail mixologists such as Mix Masters who have honed the fine art of bespoke palatable concoctions to exclusively make cocktails using Matobo African Gin. I had the pleasure of trying out a  Mix Masters gin and tonic cocktail made with the craft gin…. 🍹

Each sip is a rush of flavour, zesty fruitiness, warmth and subtle earthy tone that feels as if one is embracing the roots that anchor them to the land… its not just flavour, its an experience of the serenity of Africa, an invitation to walk with ancestors…. Or maybe just a really good buzz 😂

Comrades Beverages also curates the Matobo Gin Festival. A celebration of African craft gin which features delicious food pairings and music while offering a camping experience that promotes the beautiful Matobo as a tourist destination.

The 2024 edition of the Matobo Gin Festival will be held from the 13^th – 15^th of September.
