If you were having coffee with me, I would welcome you to my corner of the internet where we are stuck in that void between Christmas and New Year when you have no idea what day it is….
Compliments of the festive season. If you read my previous post Coffee With E-thinges I expressed how I wasn’t really feeling the Christmas spirit. I decided perhaps I needed to go out and look for it. I bought myself a Santa hat and embraced the spirit, I was even planning on dressing all Father-Christmas-like… Rasta Santa.

In my quest for the Christmas spirit, I found myself in Africa Unity Square which traditionally has the best Christmas décor in Harare, I was crushed the city fathers hadn’t felt particularly inclined to colour up the gardens with Christmas… Well almost… what they did have a tree which from afar looked like just another Christmas tree but upon closer inspection, things got curiously interesting.

See the whole tree looked like it was sponsored by Pepsi.. Cans of Pepsi were strung up on the tree.

The first word that came to my mind was how this embodied our whole current state of country and the holiday season… TRASH.🚮 Ok that may have been a bit harsh first thought, so I decided to go with hmmm but that is creative, can this count as recycling?♻️🤔🤣
I pondered over how someone would have painstakingly collected these cans from who knows where and strung them up… Upon trying to figure out how the cans were held up I made an interesting discovery that the cans seemed to be unopened and they were hanging by the can pull tab. Wait whaaaat….??

Free Pepsi anyone?
I got close and poked one to check if it really was full of Pepsi… No, it was empty but still unopened. While I was investigating the strange phenomenon a random passerby must have noticed my… interest and offered his two cents “They are sold in Mbare if you want cans like that”
Curiously curious, why would anyone sell empty unopened cans, matter of fact why would anyone want to buy them… If I was criminally inclined, I might buy them and use a syringe to fill up with cool-aid and sell to unsuspecting customers… Buyer beware I guess…
If you were having coffee with me I would tell you that for Christmas Eve I attended King Kandoro’s Comedy Show The Prodigal Son Tour. It’s his first show in Zimbabwe in two years as he has been abroad which was why it was themed around a prodigal son returning.

The show was funny and more than that, it reinforced the perception that sometimes comedians aren’t just being funny, when they are on stage they can make people think and question things around them while also having a dose of the best medicine laughter…
If you were having coffee with me, I would tell you that Christmas was spent in the kitchen and I never got a chance to dress up as Santa but on the whole from what everyone says I definitely served them a Christmas meal…
A pasta with three-tier cheese served with marinated, flame-grilled mixed barbecue, cucumber, onion and tomato salad , conveyed in paper plates.

Bless whoever invented paper plates, because cleaning up would have been another soap opera…. I think the food turned ok even if everyone who ate had to take a post-meal nap 🤣🤣🤣…
How soon after the holidays does one have to start working off the festive calories?
If you were having coffee with me, I would tell you that for the examination classes school opens on the 3rd of January, I guess they are trying to catch up for the time lost due to lockdown but gosh I can’t imagine getting back into an education mindset so soon after the New Year, all the best to these guys… The other classes will open a week later on the tenth of January… Its already back to school drama

So whats going on in your neck? Did you do anything festive?….oh wait do you celebrate Christmas?

Please complete the investigation and get back to me.

But that meal does look sumptuous and I won’t mind a plate. I already planned to incubate calories this season lolz.

I’m not sure if that tree counts as recycling, or as you first thought, trash. I’m inclined to go with trash though 🙂

Your food looks delicious B. I sent you a card, I hope you got it. Christmas kinda sucked, had plans to go to the theater and visit my brother and his family but my wife was ill. She was better by Christmas day so we spent it with her parents, her bother was absent because of some drama in regards to his new girlfriend’s dog. But, I never feel the spirit. I just want the day to come and go…but my wife likes to keep things up till the new year.

Ahh, the Christmas spirit. One can always search for it but it sure can elude me too! I can put on an excited face, love it when the day arrives as we share gifts with loved ones. 🤩 I have a better enjoyment of Christmas if I can plan ahead with the gifts for everyone. 🤪 That tree you found was very interesting!! I’ll call it aluminum art, hahaha. I prefer Coke over Pepsi, and interesting the cans were empty but the pull tabs intact! Hope you have a fun New Year!! I can’t believe it’s almost 2022! 🎉🥂🤩

I am still wrapping my head over the aluminum art and curious case of empty intact cans 🤓
It’s just a few hours to 2022 here’s to a good one

Hi Beaton,
MC & HNY to ya bud.
I have no idea what to make of the Pepsi can tree decoration but suspect someone made some advertising money with it.
Your Christmas meal looks amazing and everyone needing to take a nap afterwards (assuming they eventually woke up)
is a huge compliment. Congrats and Bravo to the chef ! ! !
My wife and I once served a very American steak meal to a group of Chinese nationals who were visiting my company.
Except for one who served as their interpreter, they spoke almost no English and were clearly bending themselves into
pretzels trying to be polite and respectful in everything they did. After our big meal in our tiny apartment, all 6 of them,
in coordinated display of complimenting my wife as the cook leaned back and belched out the loudest, wall-wrecking
gastronomical phenomenas I’d ever experienced (and given the teenagers I grew up around – this is saying something).
My wife and I were shocked and did not see it coming. one moment the interpreter was thanking her for the group
who were all nodding and making comments about the food to each other with huge smiles and pointing to things on
their plates and the next moment, our apartment was filled with 6 different sonic booms and one that lasted longer
than the others. Quickly regaining our sense of not offending them, we recognized it as a compliment but still struggled
not to laugh like high school students, which only a few years ago we still had been.
I think you did right by your family and guests.
I’m so glad you’re still out there Beaton, promoting blogging and cutting a better path for those of us who are following
your example.
Have a great HNY !

For two weeks, I had no idea what date/day of the week it was. It was quite liberating, albeit confusing. I’m learning to adult again starting today.
Empty, unopened cans of Pepsi? Not weird at all… No… I can’t help but think that they decorated the tree like that to hide the fact that the tree was dead (the branches don’t really look green).
It’s funny to hear that you didn’t dress up like Santa after all. I had a guest visiting and got them a hat, too. They also brought their own, so we were going to dress up, too. And then, we ran out of time/forgot. At least we have hats for next year!
The food looks and sounds delicious.
I normally don’t overindulge during the Holidays, but this time I did. It’s hard to stop snacking now. I don’t even want to think about going back to the gym (I went almost every day before Christmas). But, I do miss walking (love walking), as I drove a lot.
Yes, I celebrated Christmas!
I remember always going back to school the day after New Year’s Day (unless it was a weekend). Going back to work today was weeeeeeird. I need some time off now to actually get my life back together after the 2-week-long break. lol

How’s the steps to adulting again…
Been trying to get back into rhythm since Monday and it is so not going to plan haven’t started burning off all the holiday calories as I promised myself 🤣🤣
Quick question aren’t the Christmas trees dead or dying anyway 🤔🙈 like flowers in a vase 🌲 green today and brown tomorrow
I think I might randomly put the hat on 🎅 during the year 🤣🤣
It’s weird needing a break from a break 🤣🤣
Cheers to new season

Adulting has been rough so far. My brain is so sluggish.
Well, yes, but if you water the tree, it stays green for longer.
Christmas in July! Go for it. It’s a thing.
