You will remember this day, as the day you almost_____
Captain Jack Sparrow is one of the most known pirates from the movie world, of the Pirates Of the Caribbean Disney franchise. At some point in Zimbabwe we even had a literal movie pirate Jack Sparrow; a shadowy syndicate who downloaded and distributed bootleg movie DVDs.
Jack Sparrow always had the latest blockbuster titles available on DVD and for a low low price you could get yourself one too, for far less than going to the cinema or the price of the internet it would cost to stream or download. I may or may not have watched the adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow the movie pirate from a movie pirate Jack Sparrow bootleg DVD.
I dont know what happened to that particular piracy syndicate, if they ever got arrested, or they still out there in the illicit world of pirated movies…
I recently read that Disney was dropping Johnny Depp from the movie franchise in the upcoming reboot of the Pirates Of The Caribbean. Reboot means they are starting again, new story, new timelines and new characters (personally I think its just a fancy way of exploiting the fame and publicity Pirates of the Caribbean has garnered over the years even though the last installment performed poorly compared to the others)
Although it has never been officially confirmed its possible that Johnny Depp’s high profile divorce may have played a part in Disney Studios dumping Depp after allegations of abuse by Amber Heard but in a shocking turn of events, following a leaked audio said to be from Amber might mean that the victim may have been the perpetrator of abuse. Johnny Depp’s fans are calling for #JusticeForJohnnyDepp
I cannot imagine Pirates Of The Caribbean without Johnny Depp who has played the role of Captain Jack Sparrow in five films across 15 years, accumulating box office takings of over $4.5 billion, ranking it among some of the biggest movie franchise of all time.
Before Jack Sparrow came along, Johnny Depp was considered this kind of quirky, indie actor with a penchant for weird films, but he was by no means a movie star and a lot of people thought they were crazy for casting him at the time.
When the screenplay for the first of the movie franchise Curse Of The Black Pearl was being written, Captain Jack Sparrow was supposed to be a supporting character of dubious morality and sobriety with no obligation to the plot meandering his way through everything. Although the success of the movie was largely due to Johnny Depp’s portrayal of the pirate captain, they have always tried not to make the movies a Jack Sparrow movie in the way too much of a good thing can be like having too much dessert.
What I have always wondered about Captain Jack Sparrow is if he is a good guy or a bad guy; he seems to blur the lines between good, evil, being selfless one instant and then utterly selfish the next moment.
What drives Jack Sparrow?
Jack has two motivations throughout the entire franchise, that drive his every action: he wants to sail the seas forever, and he wants to do it on the Black Pearl.
A chaotic neutral character follows his whims. He is an individualist first and last.
“Me? I’m dishonest. And a dishonest man you can always trust to be dishonest. Honestly. It’s the honest ones you need to worry about. Because you can never predict when they’re going to do something incredibly… stupid”
Is he a dashing rogue at best, a scheming anti-hero at worst or much much worse?
*He always has ulterior motives and never does good for simply doing good
The first good thing he did was to save Elizabeth but turns out it was only because he wanted the caused Aztec Gold medallion she had and also he did not want to be hanged
*he has a way with words talking circles around deftly using his exceptional vocabulary to get you to do his bidding
Will: “You want me to find this?”
Jack: “No, you want you to find this, because the finding of this finds you incapacitorially finding and or locating in your discovery the detecting of a way to save your dolly bell, ol’ what’s-her-face, savvy?”
Will: “This is going to save Elizabeth?”
Jack: “How much do you know about Davy Jones?”
Will: “Not much.”
Jack: “Yeah, it’s going to save Elizabeth.”
*he will sell you out if it benefits him, he will use his enemies as well as his friends to get what he wants, he even set up Will as payment for his debt.
Davy Jones: “What is your purpose here?” Will: “Jack sent me… to settle his debt.”
Jack: “You already have my payment. One soul to serve on your ship is already over there.”
Davy Jones: “One soul is not equal to another.”
Jack: “A-ha! So, we’ve established my proposal as sound in principle. Now we’re just haggling over price.”
He was ready to find 99 other souls alongside Will to give to Davy Jones who is basically the devil of the sea to pay his debt and to gain his freedom
*He shifts blame and does not take responsibility of any of his actions
Darling, I am truly unhappy to have to tell you this, but through an unfortunate and entirely unforeseeable series of circumstances that had nothing whatsoever to do with me, poor Will has been presss-ganged into Davy Jones’ crew
*At one point he was the leader of a clan of cannibals (who knows if he also partook in their human cuisine) but he was willing to escape, leaving the crew of the Black Pearl be eaten to literally save his own skin
*He is a cheating rouge whose string of jilted lovers reacquaint him with palm of their hands when they meet
*He betrayed and abandoned the love of his life (after first corrupting her before she could take her vows and turning her into a ruthless pirate)
Angelica: “You betrayed me! You seduced me and you used me. I was innocent of the ways of men.”
*He is a serial flirt always trying to put the move on Elizabeth from the moment he first meets her and its what gets him killed at the end of Dead Man’s Chest when she kisses him and chains him to the mast leaving him to be eaten by the kraken (serves him right)
*he is a flip flopping double dealing character you can never trust him to keep his end of the bargain or if you will survive any of his schemes
*He never thinks through on the consequences of his actions like planning mutinies left and right getting people killed
How about the time he led Blackbeard to fountain of youth with no qualms about the murder of mermaids and such or even a plan as to how he would prevent one of the most ruthless pirates from becoming immortal and its only by happenstance that issue is resolved.
