Of Owning Your Domain

Has anyone else ever noticed or felt discriminated for having for having a free blog on WordPress.com?

BecomingTheMuse.Wordpress.com

When you are trying to pitch for a paying gig from a corporate, offering to be their roving blogger/brand ambassador/service or product reviewer or how about if you have tried to reach out to a celeb/author you admire and wanted to do a mini-interview or get a couple of exclusive sound bites to add to the post you are doing on their book/music/movie/show and then when you mentioned you are on WordPress.com conversation just went and lost momentum, they stopped responding to emails and PR department just told you they would be in touch when they had a moment…

I have been in a room full of digital specialists and content creators and when I mentioned my blog ending with WordPress.com could almost hear the audible eye rolling and suddenly felt like a small speck even though in some spheres I might be said to have a strong digital presence compared to the Specialists who wanted to pay me with exposure when I am the one who could give them more exposure than they have…. *Mic Drop*

I have had Web hosting companies offering me all sorts of packages to migrate my blog to a self-hosted one so I could monetise my site and have all absolute control over all my content and what I can do with it then having to adhere to WordPress’s Terms and all the lovely ways I could turn my site into an e-commerce site and the advantage of having a professional website with its own domain without the WordPres.com tag.

Going self-hosted has its merits and it’s a route I would recommend to someone who would start their site with a primary focus of monetising their site or intending to set an online shop for their products eg books or as a marketing site for their business….

Most webhosting firms (at least as I have observed from local webhosting) seem to assume your primary goal is to have lots of traffic and probably run Google ads for money and dabble in affiliate marketing

Image result for web traffic

This is all good for some but it leaves out the ones who write in their blogs because they have always written, in notebooks, letters, diaries, Hi5, Opera mini blogs, geocities atrocities (Thanks BritchyOne) Facebook notes, and now blogs, who write for the therapy and the habitual flash inspiration of getting something off your chest and of course the community.

I remember asking someone trying to recruit me to move my site to one hosted by their company, what would happen when I die or when I defaulted on payment and I was told that well the site would then shut down and eventually disappear… “No thanks “ I thought to myself as one of the reasons I started the blog was a fanciful dream at immortality

Sometimes I like to kid myself that my blog one day may have an importance similar to the one rock paintings of old have to archaeologists; but to future generations, historians in understanding what happened to the Millennials before The Great Whateverthey will call it

And then I discovered the WordPress community!!!! The are some awesome humans out there with incredible experiences to dish out and I feel honoured to share my tangle of words amongst them. Just to mention a few: fix a glitch in yesterday’s post Maria(Sweden), Kappa (Greece) Josh (Country South of Canada), Josephine(Ghana), Mable(Uganda), Mfon(Nigeria), Nobuhle (Zimbabwe), Benjamin (Uganda) Makupsy (Zimbabwe) 😂😂😂😂😂

When I saw one of WordPress Flash Sales I immediately jumped onto a paid plan and secured my domain BecomingTheMuse.net Why Dot Net because it was cheapest one of the available options and also so I could make a silly play on me being a spider on the World Web Web… NET you see (this seems funnier in my head)

WordPress offers 4 plans (I really wish they changed their billing cycle and had quarterly or even monthly options but no, they bill annually making some of the plans rather crazily priced)

Owning your domain does give you a certain level of confidence and you can sign up for a service such as Zoho Mail to get a personalised email and they have a promotional forever free plan, which is pretty sweet. You can now contact my people on TheMuse@becomingthemuse.net and they will get back to you about featuring you on my site…. Feels good to say that

PS WordPress low level plans give you rather limited options compared to the versatility of  a self-hosted site but sometimes all you want is just a place to write and not tangle around with SEO, Analytics, Plugins, Custom Themes and all that stuff all though you can with the higher level plans but oh you pay for it

Hmm. So what happens when you die and you’d paid up for one of the annual plans?

When your subscription goes unrenewed the site simply reverts to the regular free WordPress.com

Actually I am thinking of scheduling a future post dated years into the future stating if you reading this post its because I am not here to stop this post from publishing…..

I started thinking about it after I saw a scheduled post by the late Rae lyric to attend a poetry recital, gave me goosebumps

If that’s the case then I’m definitely giving WordPress plans a try! My main worry was it will disappear into thin air. 5 years of blogging out the window is not a joke.
Heish, which post by Rae was this? I remember seeing a post she had scheduled last week and it shook me.
Let’s do posts into the future. I like the idea A LOT

Hi B, I’ve not experienced the discrimination you speak of, but I also haven’t put my blog “out there” as much as you have. Personally, I think being a WordPress.com site is an advantage, because isn’t that where most of the “common folk” are? If you’re a company looking to raise your brand’s profile, why wouldn’t you want to partner with bloggers who are already plugged-in to the vast WordPress.com community?

    Also, thanks for the shout-out!

Capturing the essence of blogging is so difficult it means different things to different people but some underlying aspects do shine through

I have never understood anything about paying to have a blog. What is the benefit? I am one of those people who write because I enjoy it, and if one or two people read it and can relate a little bit, that’s a pleasant bonus.

But, truly, really, what IS the plus of paying for a blog site? I didn’t know all one’s writing would disappear if they died or otherwise stopped paying. That’s disappointing.

For people who write simply for the joy of it, there’s not much of reason or motivation to pay to have a blog…

But if you have plans to make money of the blog like in advertising revenue or having options for people to pay money directly to you like the cases of authors who sell copies of their books via their sites or artists who sell their creations via their site then you would need to pay to access the extra settings or being able to access features like support video streaming and uploading and premium custom themes.

Instead of it being just a simple blog site you will be trying to get the full function of a Website and you will also be paying for storage space so when you stop paying the site becomes no longer accessible (some providers may keep your writing for a length of time before deleting it completely)

But if it’s a wWordPress.com site it simply loses the upgrade features and returns to being a normal free one so no worries of your writing disappearing hope that clears things

I had domain names through WordPress for two of my WP blogs. Be aware that the domain name links no longer work if/when you switch back from the domain to the WordPress URL.

🙂 I have been ridiculed for not utilizing the self-hosted version of WordPress.

Do you believe that there are blogging gurus that tell their readers that they should not waste their time with the WordPress-hosted version?

Now, if I were to upgrade my domain, I would still be on the WordPress-hosted version.

On a positive note, the Happiness Engineers handle the technical stuff for us, while those who blog on the self-hosted version of WordPress (WordPress.org), are responsible for doing their own upgrades and security updates.

I will admit, that going the self-hosted way has its advantages; but the truth of the matter is that people need to choose an appropriate hosting provider (This is the knowledge that most people lack).

You are right Renard each type of hosting has its own merits and knowledge is definitely needed in figuring out what is appropriate there’s no one size solution

I have met such blogging gurus and I simply thought to myself yeah you do you and I’ll stay on WordPress hosted 😂

Thank you! I had a similar thought pattern as you when I decided to go with WordPress this time. I did default on payment to a self hosted site I had through GoDaddy years ago, not making that mistake again. I really like WordPress.

Quick question were you able to retrieve content from your self-hosted site or had you backed up….

      Yep WordPress totally rocks

Happy for the mention. I have been considering going the self-hosted route for a while now, mostly because my domain name would be cool. But it is a wonderful community that I have found. A great support system too.
    Thank you B..

The self-hosted route has got its advantages and cheaper too but it’s a bit cold out there and you would have to put in double the work….

I may have to pay for the plan to figure out why I need the plan.
I never thought about the owner of a site dying before. I may have to print everything off from time to time.
    Ick!

In that case it will probably turn out that you end up paying for a plan to realise you do not really need a plan….

It’s a sobering thought right? What will happen to your site when you die…

At least the WordPress.com hosted sites don’t seem like they are going anywhere… For now… But….
What if “they” decide to start removing idle sites in a bid to free space on their servers… I saw news about twitter planning to introduce a feature similar to this….

[…] Uncle B motivated me to move, though it took sometime to execute. When I had the conversation about it with him, I thought I was going to do it instantly because he presented evidence of how amazing WordPress is and the fact that it powers 30 % of the internet was the icing on the cake. Although it was a process detaching myself from Blogger and accepting the realit. Thank you Uncle B.I learnt the importance of being around people who build me. I wanted grow and hang around great writers, ranting together and being creative. […]
