Of Coffee And Waiting For The Rain

If you were having coffee with me, I would be happy to have you visit my corner of the internet. Feel at home, put your feet up, lets catch up….

Whats been happening with you, well I think its summer here now, or at least it’s the hot dry season to be more precise and the jacaranda trees are ever so close to littering the world in a riotous canopy of purple.

From my school days this always marked the final countdown for examination classes for those in their final form years, secondary and high school. This would be what the past four or six years of school would have been for.

If you were having coffee with me, I would tell you that years after having completed my high school I have been questioning the education system that we have that feels has more emphasis on getting good grades, passing exams limiting rather than encouraging creativity and innovative thinking, creating a generation of workers rather than entrepreneurs. More so now with our current socio-economic climate where you find graduates doing things miles away from what they studied.

If you were having coffee with me, I would tell you that at some point Zimbabwe was regarded as a nation with one of the most educated people in Africa. I have no idea where exactly this belief came from and I cant seem to find official stats or a survey to this effect but if we were so educated how did we end up in the predicament we found ourselves….

If you were having coffee with me I would tell you it’s the hot dry season and its hotter and drier than usual. I stare at the sky and even the blue looks dry and dusty, is this climate change are we becoming a desert, will this year be another drought? The electricity crisis, and the LP gas prices have put a strain on the environment as the demand for firewood goes up, the deforestation around us cant be helping our cause.

Just yesterday, I saw on the news an announcement that the plant that processes Harare Municipal Water, Morton Jaffery has shutdown “temporarirly” citing shortage of forex for the procurement of key water purification among other things. At least now they have announced it officially, but to be honest I don’t remember when we last had running water.

The little well at the back of yard has gone bone dry, almost everyone has one of these and most are also running dry, suggesting the ground water table is also low…

A deadly  health crisis is looming.

If you were having coffee with me, I would tell you how in the politics of things the blame is being placed on Harare City Council which is led by the opposition party as a stark reminder that this what you get for voting for “unwisely” as if it’s a punishment and even if it is its something that affects everyone regardless of the political affiliation. Everything it seems leads back to politics, inflation, corruption, collapsing health sector, abductions, staged abductions, protest.

I wonder if our dear late president is turning in his grave over his legacy, wait he cant turn in his grave he hasn’t been buried yet at least not officially, we await the completion of his $1million dollar mausoleum meanwhile, the country runs dry.

If you were having coffee with me, I would tell you I miss the rain. Petrichor, that’s the smell of the damp earth of after a long dry period… each day I take a deep breath and hope, today it will rain, at least some of our problems would go away, the heat, the dust, the drought, maybe even raise the water levels at the Kariba dam which generates our Hydroelectric power and hopefully make the electricity situation better….

Sometimes when I wash my locks it rains… but there isn’t enough water to spare for a wash day, so all we can do is…. wait for the rain.

Rain Dance
