Of Coffee With Heroes

Of Coffee With Heroes

If you were having coffee with me I would tell you that my blog turned six wooty woo I feel like I have known some of you longer forever and a day.

To the heroes who keep me going I salute you.

dread wema blogs

If you were having coffee with me I would tell you today is Heroes Day in Zimbabwe to commemorate those who lost their lives during the struggle for the liberation of Zimbabwe.

They died so we could be… I remember that each time someone refers to me as the born free generation (born after Independence 18 April 1980) lest I forget…

If you were having coffee with me, I would tell that there is a song which has become the soundtrack of mourning, its played on the (state) media when someone is declared or buried a hero and during the Heroes Day. It’s a wordless composition, a soulful expression of sorrow that cannot be verbalised, a groaning soul if you will, accompanied by an acoustic guitar, titled The Tormented Souls by Matias Xavier.

I recently discovered that the track had a name and was composed by a Mozambican artiste Matias Xavier to mourn the passing of Mozambique’s founding president Samora Machel and our state machinery has made this track synonymous with or countries heroes.

Sometimes I wonder how heroes who wind up at the national shrine will be picked are heroes simply those who served in the liberation and when they are gone there will be no more?

National Heroes Acre Zimbabwe

If you were having coffee with me I would tell you that a tshirt brand caused a buzz in the social media circles with our ancestors Mbuya Nehanda and Sekuru Kaguvi captioned makafira mahara a Shona phrase which translates to “you died for nothing

Makafira mahara

It’s easy to understand how one can get to such sentiments; that, did our heroes die so we could live like the tormented souls in constant agony ever humming a miserable dirge for the death of country.

Yeeeeeeh yeeeeiyeeee
Ye ye
Ye yeeeeeeeiaaaaaihey
iyeyi
Aaaaaaaryayayaaaaa
Yeeeeiyeeeeiyeeee
Yeiye
Yeyeeeeee

The Tormented Soul

If you were having coffee with me, I would tell you that our former president Robert Mugabe as reported by local independent press quoting close family confidants, has refused to be buried in the national heroes acre  in the event of his demise citing he would not want his tormentors to be part of funeral, or maybe he simply does not want his bones to be restless with souls he too tormented

If you were having coffee with me I would tell you that heroes all around us wearing a stranger’s face, we just don’t know their stories yet.

Special shout out to a blogging friend who shall remain unnamed because if groups of kids can play without the need of names why cant we? I will have you know I am paying forward the support and have a little giveaway going to celebrate my six year love affair with Becoming The Muse to one lucky local reader of my blog so you can have data to keep reading.

If you were having coffee with me I would ask you what’s going on in your corner of the world?

Hey Beaton, that tune was haunting and is now going to be cycling around my brain the rest of the day. Thanks for sharing it. I hope some joyful news is coming to Zimbabwe very soon, and that your true heroes find some rest and satisfaction for their selfless deeds.

Its quite a haunting tune every time I hear it on the radio or TV I wonder what government official has … gone to the great beyond this time, guess we kinda been programmed to it after almost 30 years of that song been on the airwaves….

And looks like in the coming week we might be in for a bit of protests I watch the news and see those HongKong stories and I see us heading to that, endless protest

Wow ok that is a lot of questions.. how has my my blog changed my life, I have met and made connections with people who have opened doors into experiences I cannot begin to….
The mistake I made… not embracing the change that the blog can bring sooner ( I used to treat it like a dirty lil secret, not telling anyone)
Mostly I have learnt that, Your Story Matters, even if it is just to you, it would be a pity to die with your story untold
