Of Coffee And The Rains Down In Africa

If you were having coffee with me, I would be happy you managed to drop by despite the rainy weather, it has been raining buckets which is quite the refreshing change from the extremely hot temperatures of the past couple of weeks when I had begun to stop wondering if life were bootcamp to hell to actually thinking if this was hell, because it was hot.

Rain outside the window; pula means rain

If you were having coffee with him we would be having a herbal tea infusion that’s great for keeping away mosquitoes and detoxing the body, fair warning don’t be alarmed when you go for a bathroom break and you realise your whole body smells floral, apparently that’s a surprising albeit not unpleasant side effect of the tea.

If you were having coffee with me, I would tell you that, its raining outside, if you listen carefully you can hear the rain speak. I don’t know what its saying, I don’t speak rain….

Speaking of the rain down here, I cant help think of the Song by Toto Africa….

It’s gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There’s nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa

If you were having coffee with me I would tell you that though I love the song to bits; I have never figured out what its about, I know Toto were a band and most definitely not priests; so what were they doing blessing rains down in Africa?

I researched the song and now I know a little bit about it, Jeff Porcaro one of the two people who wrote it  described it as being about:

a white boy writing about Africa, but since he’s never been there, he can only tell what he’s seen on TV or remembers in the past.

David Paich who co-wrote the song alongside Jeff came up with the initial idea of the song; a romanticised love story about Africa, based on how he had always imagined it. Having attended an all-boys Catholic school where a majority of the teachers had done missionary work in Africa fed into his fascination for the continent, the stories of how they used to bless, the people, their bibles, the crops and when it rained they would bless the rain……

Named after the continent, Africa is a song about someone flying to meet a lonely missionary, it’s a love story, not just about romance but a man’s love for a continent.

Africa Toto

If you were having coffee with me I would ask you to imagine this, you are lost in the hot dry desert Namib desert and out of nowhere you heard the song playing, thinking; this is it, the dehydration has you having auditory hallucinations….

Guess what you would not be hallucinating

Early this year, a German-Namibian artist Max Siedentopf set up solar powered speakers and an MP3 player with a single track at an undisclosed spot in the Namibian desert dubbed Toto Forever where the song will play on endless loop for all eternity….

“…. to pay the song the ultimate homage and physically exhibit ‘Africa’ in Africa”

Max would not reveal the location of the setup but its “like a treasure that only the most loyal of Toto fans can find

Location of the Toto forever installation

If you were having coffee with me, I would tell you I am not entirely sure about how I should feel about the song considering our history, culture and the impact colonisation and missionaries made on these or what to make of this this move by Siedentopf; the non-analytical part of me just says just enjoy the song…… love it or hate it; its out there

Hurry boy, she’s waiting there for you

Africa – Toto

If you were having coffee with me, I would say that maybe Africa’s rain need either more blessings or we need to stop blessing them rains more because we wait for the rain, and when it rains it pours.

The heavy rains caused a dam to collapse flooding mine shafts and trapping dozens of artisan miners in Kadoma. Only 8 have been rescued so far and 24 bodies recovered out of a possible 70-80 who were trapped in what has been declared a national disaster.

If you were having coffee with me I would ask you how your heart week and if you dropped  by my last post Letter To My Crush on my crazy thoughts about flowers and Valentine’s day. Have an awesome and thank you for the visit, careful of the rain, its still mad crazy out there, you can borrow my umberella if you promise to bring it back; have an awesome week

I love the Toto song, but I always assumed it was about some kind of romantic vacation; I had no idea it was about missionaries and all that crap. As a general rule I despise missionaries; because, even if they don’t commit acts of genocide or bring horrible diseases with them, their intent is to crush a people’s native belief systems and replace it with their own.

That said, the Toto song is still really good from a musical standpoint. I also think it serves as a decent critique of the “single stories” about Africa that most Americans are taught through adventure stories and TV. Africa’s either a pristine wilderness without any cities, a refugee-infested poorhouse, or a land of bloodthirsty savages. As I watched Toto’s music video, I got the sense that they were satirizing those single stories, now that they’d grown up and realized that all of those notions were false.

      Hi Josh
I agree on your view of missionaries, I may not have witnessed those early ones first hand, but today I still feel and see the effects of their “benevolence” they came pretty darn close into taking over our culture, the fact that if I write my blog in English is less because I want others to read and understand me and more because I can express myself in English better, than in my mother language……

Rewatching the music video I was trying to think on if it had any hidden meaning in the way the book being looked for is the one that burns at the end for idea… like yep some things no will ever truly no or understand ……

Ah yes, the language thing is a big deal. A classmate of mine did her master’s thesis on indigenous language revitalization in Alaska (she’s Native American), and it was a powerful experience for her.

I completely forgot about the book burning! To me that seems to be Toto’s way of saying that the picture of Africa they got from the books they read was false, but maybe I’m just saying that because I still want to like the song.

I rather love the song so I would like that premise to be the symbolism of the book burning too…

Your kind of heat would be oppressive for this old white boy, so I recommend you not pray for the rain to start or stop – but to spread out so you can enjoy more time being cooled off but a lot less time being flooded so terribly.

Now I have that Toto song in my head – which is fine, because I managed to hear the Little Mermaid song about a week ago and still have that ear worm drilling into my skull. Maybe Toto can send her away.

And, every weekend possible, I do stop by Alli’s coffee (virtual) house and hope to see you here adding your own brand of warmth and thoughts – so I did see your post of last week.

I have a fun cave story for you this week in my share essay. I also posted a new story this week I hope you’ll check out.

And Beaton, if you have any friends who would be interested in fun stories of what it was like growing up in California several decades ago – please send them my way. I’m looking for some new friends from far away to meet and share my writing with. At least I hope they would find them funny. Sometimes humor gets mangled when attempted in different cultures.

I would also like to borrow that umbrella because I’d love to stop by again.
    Hope all is well.

You are so right, if only the rains were more spread out instead of being dry all year then torrents over a compact wet season, which seems to getting smaller as the dry spells get longer and hotter…. could it be the global warming effect, I dont know, but the winds of change are blowing……

The Toto song is catchy and has a habit of just popping into your head for no reason… and I guess now it has literally become the song that never ends playing forever in the desert or atleast until the speakers succumb to the desert or someone manages to track down the location and steal them ha!
I will be sure to send some friends your way, humour is great medication, and anything including humour has potential to get mangled with cross culture navigation but communication it makes it easier….. if people expressed themselves more some misunderstandings and preconceived notions could be addressed and resolved

      many thanks

Funny, when I read the title of your post I went to youtube, listened to the song, was curious so looked it up on Wikepedia. I saw about the installation, but didn’t look it up farther. Anyway, I’m glad the heat is over. And, though it is early, happy birthday!

I think the video adds another dimension of mystery to the song, and like all good secrets that should never be fully revealed the book with explanation burns up at the end ……

The weather is so much better now, though leaning towards cold… winter is coming.
thank you for the birthday wishes, I am pretending I am not even counting down even though I am

A speaker in the middle of nowhere playing the same song. That’s creepy. As much as I find the tune catchy, I don’t think I’d appreciate it if I had to listen to it on repeat while I was dying.

I agree that the notion could easily set up the atmosphere of a horror story…….. *ominous music plays*
I am just wondering how long it willplay for before, either it succumbs to the harsh desert conditions storms and all or someone discovers it and steals it hahahaha
